Re: Alfa 164 Fault Codes (24v)

Sudden stop, now won't go at all.

Do you mean the mag sensor on the flywheel teeth? The ECU knows that the engine is turning over because it pulses the fuel pump output when I do. And pops the injectors, judging by the amount of wet fuel on the plugs, and probably the CAT!

Maybe it's somehow lost track of the TDC point with the two missing teeth??

Re: Alfa 164 Fault Codes (24v)

crank sensor faults usually stop the engine altogether for safety - not even turning on starter (from experience on a couple of cars).

Have you asked a dealer? or eg. Jamie Porter's, Rusper etc.

Re: Alfa 164 Fault Codes (24v)

Decent dealers are thin on the ground around here - last one was Dixons - need I say more. They were rubbish and charged a fortune e.g. they put the plastic wheel arch back and later I found all the s/t screws in the wiper scuttle and twice tried to fit the wrong steering rack before (I can't be absolutely sure) putting the original one back. It didn't improve anything but their bank balance...

By crank sensor do you mean the mag coil sensing the teeth on the flywheel?? After I've made up a suitable connector I'm going to test that to see what comes out on an oscilloscope. Maybe I'll post the result if it is amusing enough!

Re: Alfa 164 Fault Codes (24v)

Just for the record, because maybe no-one else is daft or desperate enough to have done it, here is what the timing signal looks like on a storage scope.

I think that maybe the big pulses with the gap at the left-hand end are the signal from the missing teeth indicating TDC??

The timing for two pulses averaged out around 14/15 mS, giving a pulse interval of about 7 mS and a total revolution time of 420mS, around 2 a second which sounds about right.

Lots more volts than I had expected, and quite a nice sine-wave when viewed at a higher sample rate.

Cheers Marconi

Re: Alfa 164 Fault Codes (24v)

hi
my non starter 96 3litr 164 is at a new main dealer awaiting diagnosis for a immobiliser fault' with warning lights key code ,engine management and alarm all on.
original rac diagnosis was fuel pump fault.
i note there is no immobiliser fault code in the m1.7 list .
Does this mean a costly trial and error daler repair
Is there a fee for obtaining the key code.?

Re: Alfa 164 Fault Codes (24v)

hi mike m
from the list of codes of monotronic 1.7 for 164 it would appear there is no code for immobiliser faults,is that correct.?
My 3 litre 96 car has beee at a main dealer for almost 3 weeks since towed to it by RAC with no diagnosis in sight .
blind leading the blind it seems.

Re: Alfa 164 Fault Codes (24v)

hi ,to anyone with an immobiliser problem, which looks like a key code matter.,here is a procedure given me by 164 register specialist Mike Buckler.
First try charging the battery up full ,disconnect for 15 minuites then reconnect and try to start,.
If that does not work.insert brown master key ,turn ignition on ,but do not try to start engine .leave for 4 seconds .remove and place on floor.
repeat with any other red keys placing alongside the master.
insert master again for 4 seconds ,and remove it
,the next red key should start the car ,if not try the next red key.
it will work ,but dont ask me why.

Re: Alfa 164 Fault Codes (24v)

Strange world... i own a 1992 Lancia Thema with the Alfa 12V V6 engine -- badged Lancia of course. I've tried to retrieve the Fault Codes using the method described and voilá: it displayed 4 "fours" (no error code stored) exactly as stated by Mike M...

Hello
Do You have codes for VM Diesel Engine od Bosch VE/EDC 1.3.1 ?
When I pump the gas pedal all the way to the floor 5 times, glow plug icon on the dashboard flashes one Time(long), and after it flashes 9 times(short).

When I pump one more time the gas pedal , 5 times, it flashes one time(long), and after it flashes 17 times(short).

Alfa 164

Does anyone know how to read a 164 V6 24v ECU that DOESN'T show fault codes? I'm slightly confused as my 164 is a 1996 yet does not show come up with anything when depressing the accelerator.

A suggestion was made further back in this thread about connecting to Pin 8 of the ECU? Has anyone done this, can it be confirmed to work and not to blow the ECU?

If the ECU is M1.7 doe sthat mean it can still produce the fault codes and that it's just not hooked up as suggested above?

Failing any o that, does anyone know of a scanner that will definetely read the M1.7? I already know that AlfaDiag definetely will not read it!?

Any advice would be appreciated... have a 6Cyl wide missfire and have no idea what to do.

~

Dave
