Help Thinkin' of a 2004-2005 166 2,4 Jtd - Good idea ??

Good mornin' everyone from a new member in the cold winterland of Norway!

Im must admit it straight away...I AM in love with AR's and have been for years - in secret!

I am in the prosess of buying myself a 166, a car which I have drewelled upon many time sinces I first saw it, but only recently I discovered that it actually got a facelift a few years back, and now I find myself lovin' it even more!

I have decided to find a 2004-2005 sample, with the diesel engine. But I wanna check out with you boys and girls what to doublecheck before I buy ? Are they any problems enginewise, with steering, suspension and so one? Are there issues to be dealt with and maybe modified to get rid of problems later on?

Are there some well known bugs or flaws I should check extra carefully before I buy ? I have read myself to an understandig that the diesel engine is a strong and mighty one, but is it good?

And, shall I buy the one with an automatic or manual transmission ? I must admit, i'm a sucker for cars with automatic, but if the transmission is well know amongst you guys to be a bad one, then i'll stand clear of it and buy a manual one instead !

Please, feel free to share your thoughts and experiences with me. I am hoping to be a very happy and satisfied Alfa-OWNER pretty soon !!

most of the owners here are from the UK, where the Diesel was never sold. Hopefully somebody from the continent will be able to answer your question about the engine.

Morrizon exaclty as Klap says...If they did that in RHD there would be one less for you to buy.
They were very reasonably priced here in the UK but an indie seems to be capturing the market and marking up prices. No idea what Norwegian prices are.
The auto boxes are as a general rule fine.the heater matix can take out the Auto ECU which causes mayhem.

The diesel engines are as reliable if not more so than the V6's ..Just remember cambelt.

Now that is one nice motor. It has the built in phone too..the icing on the cake is if it has the G3 reader in the boot.
Boy my wife is now exceptionally happy that they stopped the Jupiter2 sailing from Newcastle to Stavanger hagushend and Bergen.Me I am now sad.

If I went to Bradford 1 way for Pomeo..If that has G3 "I would walk 5 thousand miles"..pity it over water.

And HOW can I easily - if there's any - check if its a G3 reader back in there? I'm going to have a look at that car tomorrow.....and it WOULD have been sweet if it has the G3

Its above the CD player in the boot. There should be a small eject button on it..If not it doesn't have it..Over here the dealers say it has sat nav but usually it doesn't...they just see the sat nav button on the dash and assume it has.

GTV 3.0,166 JTD,75 2.0

I'm actually owning one 166 20v jtd. It has been mostly a reliable car, although I had an issue with an engine failure that resulted in a new engine been put in at 86 tkm. Apart from that episode and the problems following due to bad installation work it has been ok, currently 157tkm on the clock. I have the sporttronic version and I was reluctant to choose the auto version at first but I wouldn't have it any other way anymore. The box is a 5 speed Aisin box and is a very sweet unit. Matches the engine very well.
One thing I had a problem with was the engine shutoff valve that got me stranded a couple of times, the car not starting. Was a cheap fix thou with a jubilee clip jamming the valve in open position. One EGR valve and one MAF and some suspension parts is the rest of the list on parts changed. Next on the list is the merc bushes and some powerflex at the rear.

One thing you need is an engine heater as it might bee as cold in Norway as it is here in Finland. It is a bit hard to start if not preheated when temperatures are below -20C.

I'm satisfied with the car as it is a quiet cruiser and you feel fresh even after 1000 km in one day. It's simply one of the best cars out there.

I've got the 166 2,4 diesel... Changed MAF and some brake parts.... Currently 110 000 kms..

Service every 20 000 kms always cost close to NOK 10 000 or more...

Here in Finland a smaller service at 20k is about 400 -500 euro, the big one at 120 k is closer to 1000 euro with the cambelt. These prices at an indie.

Now it came to my mind, one thing more to the list of things gone is the turbo. Lasted 150k, cost of new one fitted was about 1700 euro. You have to buy a new one when the old is worn because it is a VNT turbo that is not repairable.

Thnx for your answers guys

I am planning on taking a trip and test both the one I linked to over the weekend, but will also try out a blue one, same year but with manual gearbox and 75' 000 km on its back....

That looks sweet as well, but i'm a sucker for automatics

And Getvonen, we do luckily seldom have minus 20 here where I live, but I AM planning on checking up how much it costs in Sweden to mount a webasto into it. I have had those one a few other cars, so I miss it MUCH !

dangers of:
- automatic: leaking heater matrix
- manual: clutch and broken spring under the pedal (not sure exactly where, I have an auto)
note, you can also flip the automatic to manual mode, this is how i have mine, except for reversing

I guess it has something to do with the fact that you have the steering wheel on the right (wrong) side

Värmepaketet in sweadish, don't know what it is in norwegian. Located behind the ICS in the passenger footwell in cars with steering wheel on left side. Easily covered with plastic, good reminder because I have the plastic still laying in my trunc ready to be fitted.
