Over Heat........eeeek!!!

Driving down the A46 following the Carrerra or something when my temp went really hight, well right to the very top with the red light on, i soon slowed right down and slammed into some ones driveway within seconds................The can soon cooled very quickly so the fan must be working, waited till it hit 90deg and set off again, so i decided to boot it a little to see if the temp would right................oh crap, it did, very fast. I dipped the clutch and let it coast which cooled the car back to normal.......................what the hell could be wrong with it now..............the rad is new, car is garaged so cant see it being broken...............I did look at the water and it was on min. Will need to look when the cars cooled down tomorrow morning..............I Have no idea, i know there are a few topics on this, but nothing similar to this. The 3.0 does have a metal water pump thing doesn't it? simply had a lovely drive on the way back tho, the konis worked like a dream, the car drove smooth as a pie, just need to get the tracking done again, has a very very small pull to the right............so this has pissed me off...........oh well!

Might be the water pump, just read a lot of threads on this..............but 3.0 Water Pump change?..............Has anyone done this?

Also H/Gasket.........dont think so, the car runs fine, pulls well, would their be any other things I should be looking out for?

I had similar - one off, was fine next day, water a little low, I put it down to an airlock. I posted about it here. No re-occurance.

if the temp went all the way 2 the\top and the light came then its more likely your head gasket has gone, same ting happened to me,and u can check if ya waterpump works by checking if u can see water entering the watertank from the pipe at the top ( small pipe)

What other signs should I look out for? I'm sure the head gasket is fine, took it for a spin and no issues, I really hope it's what stek had, just low water issue. But could do with more info on the water pump and what rate it could use water. E.g if a crack could cause the water to leak 1/2 the tank in 100 miles, I can drive it and see what losses I get and make my own guess to what the issue is. just hope I don't lose any water and it was just me not looking properly

I remember reading a post a while back re 3.0l cars and the metal impellor water pump and I'm sure the advice was that the 3.0l got plastic ones too. If you don't know the integrity of yours then perhaps you should have it checked out. If that is the problem then it usually manifests itself at high revs when the impellor starts to slip on the shaft.

Losing that much water is a worry though - have you checked all your pipes & clips for leaks? Also, if it was the headgasket I think you'd notice sludge in your oil by now. You could always get a 'sniff' test done first to rule the gasket failure out and then take it from there.

not an Alfa

The only V6 24v that came from the factory with a metal water pump impeller was the GTV/Spider; even the GTA's have a plastic one.
The "crack" people refer to is in the impeller itself, not the external water pump housing.
I would get a headgasket (Sniffer) test done first, as you don't want to change the pump and belts, only to find the gaskets are knackered.
Also, have you checked your radiator for leaks?
