that's very true - factor in cambelt change at about 500 squid if needed, clutch a bit more, suspension anything up to 1000....history of big jobs is worth quite a lot!

Fair point about the history.....i would rather pay for the 105K one if there are receipts for the big jobs...
I have been told that both of them have extensive history files, how long does the suspension last before it needs redoing again?

Such a great car and when it comes to spirited driving the manual is fantastic
a 166 is good in the snow, that big V6 gives impressive grip in the slippy stuff

Might have to find out soon, it's due to snow Wednesday and my 146 has decided to sound like a bag of f**king nails, right now I'm ready to burn it .
Jay I will keep you posted regarding Feb 7th.

Think there are bottom end probs, was showing a Scirico (proper one not new squashed Golf) how a real car goes and I think she decided enough was enough
So now sounds like a bag of nails, was going to get it over to Alex's tonight but had other issues to deal with so will get AA to take it over on Sunday and get his verdict.
Alex has come forward with an amazing offer in regards mending it that turned me from depressed to stunned in one email

oh god why is this sooooooooooo bloody difficult.....
So far i have the following things i want to have
3.0
Leather (prefer grey or cream dependant on colour of car)
Manual
White dials (sounds petty but they look better)
Black/Silver centre console/steering wheel
DSP & Sat Nav (a nice to have but not a deal breaker)
Got to be either Black, White or dark Grey
Would like horseshoe alloys or sport alloys if possible
now i have seen this 1998 ALFA ROMEO 166 3.0 V6 24v Super
60K with history, the downside is i will have to source a leather interior and get rid of the wood, being an S reg it is one of the early ones.
even though it is a low miler i think it is overpriced by about £500, any comments?
The longer i look the more i want and the fewer cars i see that fit the bill

yep i've seen that one, it looks really nice, however there isn't a lot of history, nothing to support cambelt of suspension, and is an Auto.
The dealer operates with a mobile phone which also makes me slightly suspect, having been in the trade for 10 years there were some alarm bells.
I am looking for something i can keep for a few years, i don't envisage it doing many miles as it will be my weekend/Alfa events/Holiday car.
The first thing i will do is run the polisher over whatever i buy, as K9 will testify i like my paintwork to be absolutely pristine, i am a little OCD about it sometimes

Jay, they have had that car for sometime - I saw it advertised tail end of 2008 - the photos are even the same, including no aerial stalk on the roof! When I spoke to them then, they were vague enough about history/belts etc to put me off travelling up there.
If its been standing around for sometime I guess it would need a good service which could highlight some other deterioration associated with lack of use - even though it look likes it just been MOT'd, so I think you are right in thinking it looks overpriced. Unfortunately, I cannot recall how much it was up for at that time, but do not think it was a great deal more than what its up for now - if not the same.
I take it you have spoken to them to know it has history? If so have they given you any indication if (and when) the belts were done and any suspension/clutch work etc?
I remember this one because the registration indicates its one of the cars Alfa farmed out for press sessions (S620-630 LJB) and I think I have seen it in a magazine (not featured- just used as a library/example photo).
Also, they do not mention it in the advert but it also has the telephone - you can (just) see the phone button and card slot through the steering wheel.

Good luck with your search J, good 166's are hard to find but one will come up sooner or later and the long search will be well worth it.

i received an email a while ago when i had called the search off, having found the email i now waiting for a reply from the seller.
2000 3.0 super in dark blue with cream leather 90K taxed and tested, have been told the front bushes squeak, the rear exhaust needs its hanger re-welding and the rad could do with changing this summer, there are a couple of marks on the body but the amount being asked seems to reasonable.
No info on DSP or Sat Nav, but if it has them then that's a bonus
Am waiting for some pics, might be time for a 'roadtrip'

Well, it's looking good so far....
Is has DSP, no sat nav and will have a new MOT and exhaust repaired, a bonus it has the polished pepperpot alloys which i like a lot...
it does have a bit of damage though, chatting to the bodyshop i am looking at wing repair, bonnet repaint, bumper repair and other wing blend as well as drivers door
S7300428.jpg
S7300429.jpg
and the rear door, i would get the PDR guys on that......
S7300427.jpg
I would like it before Epsom......but worse case scenario i will take the Peugeot
