What about this one. Mileage is a bit high but it seems to have just had the belts done and is a twinnie:
Alfa Romeo : ## Alfa Romeo 166 2.0TS Black Leather ##
1200 notes but I reckon that at this time of year you could get it for below the £1k mark with a bit of negotiating.

And now down to £1k with advert noting: "did sell it on ebay but winning bidder didnt contact me".
eBay ended yesterday at 13.20pm yesterday and auction noted payment within 48 hours.
Not giving the winning bidder much time there........... unless of course things are not what they seem .....

I bought mine for less than that and have done nearly a happy year in it. It is however important to remember that with an Alfa you are potentially buying a very expensive repair job. If you can get service history and proof of belt change then that is worth paying extra for. Don't worry about high mileage. I bought mine with just under 170.000 mls instead of paying a bit extra for one with 60.000 mls. The one with 60000 mls needed close to £2000 to get it through MOT and have the belts changed (I know cause a friend of mine bought it). Mine cost £600 to get new front suspension and a new rear Exhaust box. Just thought this might show you how lucky / unlucky you can be.
Anyway in loved every mile in it and very sad to see it go to metal heaven after a taxi hit it.

a) not sure how anyone thinking of buying a 166 could ever consider an E-Class!
b) trust me i used to work for a Merc dealership, the E-Class has a whole heap of troubles, generally very expensive to fix!
BUY A 166!!!! I bought one a week ago & i love the thing!!

yeah, the e-class is a very comfy car (great if you're an OAP), especially in auto (never buy a manual Merc!), but you're paying way over the odds for a badge! I worked in a dealership for 5 years, & every used merc i drove had warning lights that wouldn't look out of place on connect-4!!
Like any Alfa, look after it & it'll re-pay you in bucket loads. I've loved all the Alfa's i've owned, nothing makes me feel the way i do when i get behind the wheel of this fantastic brand. Touch wood, i've never had any trouble with them (or any Italian car i've owned). I love the feeling of driving the 166 knowing that even when in production it was a rare sight, but now its timeless elegance stands out even more!

Don't be fooled there. Since 1994/95 Mercs having a renowned build quality is in my opinion a myth - and I have both close and firsthand experience there
Good luck with that particular model - make sure you pack plenty of rust inhibitor - especially up around the bulkhead/firewall, jacking points, bottoms of doors, roof edges, window surrounds, boot floor.....
Make sure you get one that has a good history including evidence of bodywork warranty/inspections.......
And to think Lancia got slaughtered for such "quality"
Oh - and Happy New Year

My father-in-law has a 2001 plate E class which he bought at 2 years old from a Merc dealer in Dublin for nearly €40k. After about a year things started going wrong with it which were fixed under warranty but he has had nothing but problems with it since then and has spent a fortune on it fixing various electrical faults and it's still only done about 70k miles. He has been amazed over the years at the cars I have bought and had no problems with despite age and high mileages (Audi A6, BMW 5 series and now the 166)! The early E classes also have a major known problem with rusting front suspension turrets.
Each to their own but as some of the guys point out every car has its own problems.

I looked at a few 1990-95 E class CE Mercedes and even a few older 450 SLC myself but after reading about the clever degradable wiring loom and other horrors I decided to give a two finger salute to the three star car...
Mercedes apparently when downhill and never recovered after the Americans took control of the company.
I wish I could get my Lancia HPE 2000 i.e. back.... Even the fully detached rear inner wheel arches had it charm.. Funny to see the top suspension mounts move in the rear mirror, and the boot fill up like a swimming pool....
Or the 1969 Volvo Amazon that I was still running daily in 1990, 21 years old and never failed to reach its destination (until wrecked a few years later by a flying car going through the wall to the storage unit it was parked in).
At least the Alfa brand it still pure Italian design and will probably always have its charm and flaws.

I have had both an E class a C class and a 5 and 7 series BMW.....
I fancy something with a bit of style, hence the reason i want another Alfa.....
Having read some of your threads i cant help but think yours needs someone with a bit of time, knowledge and patience to get it back up together, i'll tell you what, i'll give you £250 for yours and i'll come and collect it on the weekend

ummm...all of us probably! There is far more enjoyment and involvement to be had from having an alfa rather than a boring german box and i suspect they wouldn't be any cheaper to run!
