Crazed Stupid Question - What are the Marks after 90'C till 120 ?

Ok this sounds silly but I haven't till this day got a clue what are the marks after the 90C mark on my 164 V6 24v. On Idleing Only it manages to stay at 90, same as when driving. In trafic It goes up one notch then almost at times another but no warning light and no boiling. I changes the senders but when between the last 2 notches before 120 with a laser gun it showed me 110 -112C. What is the normal 164 V6 24v Running temp in traffic ? Pic Included.

Thanks & Regards

The notches are 90, 100, 110, 115, 120. So your laser readings would appear correct. The car when warmed up should sit at 90 all of the time. If its overheating when stationary in traffic it sounds like your radiator and/or fan isnt working properly.

Ahh that makes sense. My User Manual has 70C in the middle and was getting me confused.

When Idle after starting her up she stays always at 90C but once moving it goes down a little. When in traffic, the max it has ever been to was 110C or close to 110C. I know its temp goes up as it has the water pump with plastic Impellers and isn't so efficient. Plus when I rev the engine at that temp it quickly starts falling.

Should the temp rise to 110C, can it cause problems ? I believe the Max is 115C. I am planning a Pump change in the future as I only use it twice a month so its not so essential.

So the Normal running temp is 90C I am guessing!?

Thanks

Yes, normal running temp is 90. I still think your problem is radiator/fan related, as the water pump tends to work ok at low speeds and slip at high speed/revs, if its failing.

could well be the thermostat not working right my 166 used to drop below 60c on the motor way then in traffic climb upto 90c now it sits like a rock on 90c

Thanks for your reply's. actually I've only replaced the thermostat a few months ago and from Alfa Romeo. I think it could be the radiator however If you leave it idling it stays at 90C once moving it will stay at 90C or drop a little (85C maybe) but after some driving (in Malta that is) if I get stuck in traffic the temp sometimes rose up to 100C and on few occasions 110C but never over that mark and only for brief periods. Once it dropped my oil prssure to 1 and the light came up, most possibly cos the temp was too high. I am now fiddling to fit an oil cooler fan to help the heat exchange cos its position at a standstill isn't very helpful.

Good Evening,

No actually not stupid at all. My Radiator fan has been "Maltesed" unfortunately. Her previous Owner removed the 2 speed switch with a single speed (Fast) and replaced the Radiator Temp Sensor to turn on at 72C (I replaced however but kept the 72C temp sender). Problem is that here the weather is so hot that even small cars overheat as the Radiators Are Cooled with 40C Air. Although I tried to change it back to standard, The Alfa Dealership, & Specialists advised me otherwise. Funnily enough though when the engine hits 90C the fan comes in and reason being is that the top part of the rad would be at 90C but the lower part would be around 72C - 75C (Confirmed with Laser Gun) So technically its cooling the water before the hot water comes in which in some home made way actually works! Here we have Radiator Manufacturers that build ones entirely of Alluminium which is of Great Advantages I believe that in the future that is going to be my next objecive.

Regards
