Alfa 166 2.5 V6

Anybody know V6 AOC originally X691 FVV?

Hi all, great site. It's been very helpful in the run up to buying my car.

After a string of cars getting steadily more expensive, including Limited Edition Fiat Coupe Turbos, E36 BMW M3, Evo 7, and a 350z, i've turned to motorbiking for my adrenaline fix.
However i also wanted a car that could stir the emotions, look great on your drive, and that was good value for money.

Well i've got it. I picked up my 166 2.5 V6 on Saturday and enjoyed every mile of the 250 or so to get it home. What a car! It has the optional 17" alloys, and looks to me and kind of feels like it may be sitting a little lower than standard. The car is immaculate and has obviously been cared for, it's had the front end resprayed as there are very few stone chips for a car that has done 115k! The interior is unmarked, there isn't a squeak or rattle any where in the cabin, and what a lovely cabin it is too.
The engine is smooth and performs well, and the suspension and chassis feel very tight!
Ok so i've not had the quietest of cars in the past, but i'm amazed at how quiet the 166 is at ***mph on the motorway!
Also what a superb stereo!

She has an Alfa dealer service history up to 84k, and i have nothing after that. However as the car was in such good condition i felt the previous owner probably wouldn't have neglected it on the servicing side of things. Problem is i know Italian cars, i've had several Fiat Coupe turbos, and a 156 v6, and i can't quite put it out of my mind that maybe the cambelt hasn't been done, or it has been done, and could be due again soon.
The guy i bought from on ebay came across as very honest, he'd bought the car from trade, and his feedback is 100%.

I am very very happy with the car, and it's condition is fantastic, i paid £1500 for it, and i'd still be happy if i'd paid double or more for it. It certainly looks like it's worth a lot more!

Does anybody know this car or it's history, it is back on the original reg no X691 FVV, but was private plated V6 AOC, which i can't help but think stands for Alfa Owners Club. Someone on here must know it?

I'm presuming MotorVogue would not have serviced this car at 72k and 84k and not changed the belts, but i'm looking for piece of mind.
Also i'd like to thank the previous owner for looking after it so well!

Any help appreciated
TIA

Sounds great but get the belts changed asap! The belts should have been changed in no more than 72K origionally, but never leave it that long now. i would do at 48K on the V6. Check the history and change the water pump for a metal impellor type if it has not already been done. Good luck!

Hi you could try the DVLA web site. They loose our information & get away with it, but it will cost you to get info… if they deem it prudent to issue it.
It may help you, let us know how you get on if you used the DVLA.
Cheers

Thanks guys, a good friend of mine runs an Italian car specialist garage and will do the job if it needs doing. I'll get him to check the condition of the belt etc first.

I guess i'm more interested to know if this car is known on these forums, purely becuase of the AOC number plate.

might be worth checking over at the alfa owners club website/forum - it's the "official" club where as we're only really a forum....it might be known over there. I think we only know it as the car that's been on ebay a couple of times

Re: Anybody know V6 AOC originally X691 FVV?

Hi Niall, thanks i'll see if they know the car over there. Yes it is the one that was on ebay, fortunately it is as good as it looks in the pictures. Not sure why it didn't sell sooner, lucky me though. It really is a very well looked after car, tbh i was thinking for the money i spent i would do well to get a slightly scruffy 166 that i'd put a little tlc into to get upto scratch. This looked too good to be true, but as yet i can't find fault with it. Well other than it prob needs the cambelt changing again ;-), however i knew that would be the case when i bought it.

Don't forget the tensioners. And pulleys for real peace of mind. Not cheap though…

No no no, condition of the belt not entirely relevant. When mine went, the dealer rebuilt the top end, fitted a new belt and 100 miles later the belt went again. Why?

because as Badgers says, I had a another problem throwing the belt off. Put it off at your peril!

Re: Anybody know V6 AOC originally X691 FVV?

Thanks for the warning guys. I'm not a mechanic myself so when i said my mate would check the belt condition, i assumed that to an extent was all that mattered. He does of course know better and i'm sure will do what needs to be done.

It's a lot cheaper when you don't have to pay for the labour though ;-)

Re: Anybody know V6 AOC originally X691 FVV?

checking the belt is like looking out of the window to asses the weather - you cant rely on it. In my book, maximum 40k or 4 years on a belt.
Like others said get it done:
Belt
Tensioner
Pulleys x2
water pump to metal GTV impellor.
Pulleys or tensioner are just as likely to go as the belt itself.
Your mechanic will need the special camlocks for a proper job.
