How to fit cruise control.

This thread follows my adventures fitting cruise control.

what you will need.

The code to your ICS!
A 4mm Allan key.
A 24mm Socket, socket exstention and a ratchet on the other end!
A steering wheel puller,
two m8 bolts that are at least 2" long
cruise control stalks!
A torque wrench that can accuratly messure 24 newtons

First thing to do is make sure the front wheels are pointing straight ahead of the car and the steering wheel is sitting in the middle to. (if that make sense) disconnect the battery. then leave it for AT LEAST an hour! go and have a cup of tea of refit a central locking motor like I did!

after the time is up. put the key in the ignition and make sure every thing is nice and dead! the logic of this is to discharge any capacitors that maybe holding a charge. Its total parionia but you really don't want the air bag going off in your face!

Lower the panel on the floor well.

once you have done this unscrew the five bolts on the underside of the steering column holding the cover on. remove the top cover. you will find a hidden screw at the far back of the panel that you have to unscrew to get the panel off.

The lower panel will not come off completely as the is a big scary yellow connector stuck to it. Use a screw diver to get it free.

Now the moment of truth. Open the door and get out of the car if you haven't already! go and empty you bladder to avoid embarrassment. now DISCONNECT THE WIRE!

Nothing happen to me either! Once this is done you can remove the three bolts holding the airbag on. GENTLY remove the airbag and disconnect the wire at the back.

Now I put the air bag on the back seat. Place it face up and keep tools and any other items away from it. If you think I'm being paranoid I am not you have to admit that we are armatures playing with serious equipment.

Return to the drivers seat. You will see a yellow fuzzy warming telling the that you have to be qualified to proceed. Thank god I have a Degree in Neuroscince!

Remove the yellow fuzzy warning and disconnect the wire that is in your way.

Now you see those four big screws at each corner? DO NOT UNSCREW THEM! unless you have six pairs of hands to put everything back to gather. There is a big lump covered in a rubber cap. Remove the rubber cap. it will revel a 24mm bolt. Get your ratchet and remove it. make sure that your steering wheel does not turn.

The blot will ping off due some sort of clever spring. once that if you have to mount the puller useing the two bolt holes. (see pics) Then just gently turn the steering wheel puller and it should all come off!

Once this has been done you can see the stalks. They are only held on by two screws and a about a 100,000 wires. Be very careful you don't get them confused!

Fit you new cruise control stalk and don't forget to finf the new wire and fit it!

Be very carful of reassembly! there are two prongs at the back of the steering wheel. these fit into the deep holes on the withe plastic spinning part of the stalks.

you us the 24mm bolt to push the steering wheel instead of the puller. If you under tighen the bolt then there is a risk of the steering wheel coming off. However if you over tighen you can split somthing that sounds very important. That is why you should use the torque wrench to fit it to 24 newtons. I it dosen't feel right then stop take the wheel off and try again. (I took it to a mechanic to make sure that it was on proplery.)

If you were clever enough not to remove the cradle that the air bag sits on its easily if your a dummy like me you will spend about 30 minutes swearing and trying to evolve an extra pair of hands.

then You just have have brown trouser moment of refitting the airbag and reconnecting the battery.

Oh make sure the heated seat button is "off" Its very easy to knock it on when your working on it then it will drain your power!

I would like to thank Naill for the use of his Puller.

Re: How to fit cruise control.

Just a note. I have just test driven the car.

The steering is very stiff and the wheels don't correct them selves when you let go of the steering wheel. I'm sure this will have been caused by over tightening the steering column.

I will sort it tomorrow when I have found out the proper torque to apply.

Cheer Stuart

Re: How to fit cruise control.

I felt sick when I found the problem. you will notice a white piece of plastic that spins and attempts to cancel the indicator. if you look closely there are too deep holes on either side of the disk. On the back of the steering wheel there are two prongs. I had misaligned these and that was what was causing the problem.

They were a bit bent I just bent them back and reattached the wheel.

I'm going to go to a garage tomorrow And ask them to check over the work just to make sure its up to scratch.

Cheers Stuart

Re: How to fit cruise control.

Just to get things straight: do you only need the cruise control stalks? Are the controls for the CC already in place in all 166s?

First look at the clutch pedal. There should be a switch at the top of it, like on the brake. Then remove the cowling behind the steering wheel, very easy to do. Hidden on the left, usually covered in a grey spongy foam protection, will be a white connector. If you have these, cruise control is plug and play. (if you can find the stalks)

Re: How to fit cruise control.

Well all is well with my steering. Infact the mechinc said there was nothing wrong with it and I had done the job properly!

Now then this is a bit of a stupid question does anybody have the operation instrutions? it would be a nice addition to the theard if somebody could post them.

I tried to use the Cruise control this moring with out much luck. So I think I will have to give the clutch and brake sensor some attention.

any advice greatfuly recived

Cheers Stuart

Re: How to fit cruise control.

When you are up to the speed you wish to cruise along at, you switch the stalk on, the cruise light will come up on the dash. You can vary the speed up and down using the + or -. If you brake or clutch, the cruise switches off.
