Hot central dash air vents on 164

Has anyone come up with (or even bothered to come up with!) some way of keeping the dashboard air vents on a 164 cool? I've noticed that being black, they get very hot, and it must reduce the efficiency of the air conditioning considerably. It's only after an hour or two that they cool down, so they must be taking a lot of the cold air from the air con. I was toying with the idea of putting some silver foil on it, but I guess it could be distracting as well as looking daft!

Not really expecting anyone to have thought about this, but just wondered…

How good is your a/c?

The pipes which lead up to the center vents are fairly small in diameter, IIRC. That should leave a fair bit of a void between the ducts and the plastic bits we see, if you follow me.

This should mean that, although your central "pod" will still feel warm to the touch, the ducting carrying the cold air should have become cool quite quickly. The air space between will act as an insulator, so don't expect the outer housing to react as quick.

That's why I was asking how effective your a/c is in the first instance. Do you feel a really chill burst of air within a few seconds of starting the a/c? I find that although the black leather takes a while to cool down, the interior is quite comfortable within a short space of time, even if I've left it parked in the sun all day... I find one of those windscreen fold-up reflector/shield thingies makes a big difference, even though they do make the car look a bit daft!

Nostalgia used to be better than this...

The A/C's pretty good. Just had a new expansion valve and receiver drier fitted.

It works pretty well, I was just curious really, however your explanation means I won't worry about it any more, cheers!

Don't take it as gospel, BN!

I'm working from (very dim) memory here, somewhere on this forum are pictures of the dash being pulled apart, and I seem to recall the ducts as being circular in section, that's all.

I know what you mean but I think the heat gain over that tiny surface area will be extremely small compared to the volume flow rate of air going through them. Even my old one with "tired" aircon can cool those down within a few seconds of starting up. I seem to remember reading something about an owner in Texas covering the black plastic cover at the base of the windscreen with a "Nomex" type reflective foil though. He was arguing that the heat gain from that big surface area was significant - at least in the Texan sun!
