Re: So what car would persaude you out of the 166? (Warming contains Non Alfas!)

I would like something RWD/4WD next, however, all prospective purchases have to get clearance from her-nibs, who has a keen eye for the aesthetic aspects of cars, regardless of whether they are any good to drive or not!

Eg. I have considered, at various stages;

Jaguar XJ/Mercedes S320CDi -"Old man's car"

Saab 9-5 Estate-"Hideous"

Any BMW- "I don't like BMWs"

Subarus-"Hideous vent" (in the bonnet she means)

And so it goes on......

Therefore, my next car would probably be something like an Audi S4 Avant (S5 2.7 TT), not the last word in an involving drive, but has a brilliant engine, 4wd traction, Recaro interior.
The Phaeton has also caught my attention, basically a Bentley underneath, air suspension, 4wd and built in the same factory, IIRC.

Or, if I'm staying Italian, 159 Ti 2.4 Sportwagen, which she does like, thank the Lord!

Regards, Simon.

Changed the big GMC Yukon to a Honda MRV..Petrol prices and all..
A V6 is always better than a V8..An MRV is basically a Honda Pilot AWD..You dont have it in the UK..It has the 3.5 VTEC engine with 260hp..And boy does that thing go..It is way faster than my 166 and howls like a formula 1 all the way to its 7000 red line..It is also a 7 seater with all the gadgets...And apparently Honda mechanics never break down...to be seen...................

Simon, what about a S80 T6? or a Vanquish S?

Thumbs Up Re: So what car would persaude you out of the 166? (Warming contains Non Alfas!)

The S80 T6 is a real rocketship, but I would guess that it's not so good around corners, also 272 bhp and 280 lb ft is too much for the front tyres, I would prefer something RWD or 4wd with that sort of output.

Vanquish S? That's the fantasy garage, isn't it?

They start at £55,000 used, so that's a bit rich for me, but even if I could afford it, I wouldn't; Not as good as a DB9, cheap and nasty interior, a Ford parts-bin special, not a patch on the later Astons, also stupid flappy-paddle gearbox.

If you must have a Ford-group coupe with a big bonnet and great big engine, then the XKR is better value (£20,000/400bhp).

Maserati Quattroporte, now that's the car, cheapest is now £32,000;
However, I reckon that the 166 looks a little bit like a Quattroporte if you squint; It is, after all, the poor man's Quattroporte.

Having driven it fairly hard basically all day on fantastic roads in some horrible horrible weather, getting it covered in mud and then taking the family to a restaurant in it, there can only be one real answer.

Nothing.

Thats an interesting website.

I set up a race between a 2.5 and 3.0. It wasn't the most exciting race of all time!

a mate of mine had an st220 brand spanking in 2000, nice enough inside not a patch on a 166, very quick though. he paid 23k 2 weeks later we went past the same garage and they had a second hand one(same reg as his so only 6 -9 months old) for 15k thats alfa rivaling depreciation.

Alfa 166 3.0 V6

Re: So what car would persaude you out of the 166? (Warming contains Non Alfas!)

Right.. Im new to this forum.. or any forum for that matter.. But this topic of what you would replace your 166 is really interesting.. and one perhaps Alfa Romeo themselves should have thought of when they dropped the 166 without replacing it.. The 159 is great.. but not quite a replacement for the 166.

Ive got a 166 3.0 V6.. Auto.. Its brilliant.. Dark Blue.. Cream leather.. Sat NAV electric seats the works! Previously had a 156 2.0 Selespeed sportwagen.. When I went up to the 166 I still missed the 156.. such different cars but both equally loveable! My sister has a 156 and I get to drive it now and again and I still think it is great.. quick and agile and always seems to want you to go faster and faster. that 2.0 twin spark has to be the greatest 4 cylinder engine in the world!

I also own a 1996 Maserati Ghibli GT (2.8 V6 Twin Turbo)... And even after driving that monster which is a real brute with is heavy stearing and 6 speed manual box and 330lb/ft of torque I still look forward to getting into my Alfa... I think the problem is.. The grass is always greener.. but there is a certain Magic with Alfas that no other car can fully replace.. Even if they are more powerfull or more expensive... So what do I want? A 166 with about 300bhp and rear wheel. I also Want a 147 GTA for when I want to pretend Im 18 years old.. Oh and I have the same dilema with my Masa.

Replacing the Masa with a newer Masa would be great.. but then I still have the problem that all these Italian cars have such distinct personalities that even the new Masa wont make me want to stop wanting the old one... Swapping the charm and brutishness and square jawed looks of the older one for the newer faster smooth skinned curvy 3200gt.. Well one is now replacement for the other.. but equally desireable

This is impossible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS.. anyone know if it is possible to get a 6 speed auto box to replace the 4speed one on my alfa... The gear ratios are my only complaint..

Awesome selection of cars Nads, was thinking that when I get off the car restrictions we have here for young drivers I'd consider a Ghibli.

Don't think we can get any 6 Speeds unfortunately, but if someone knows otherwise I'd be interested too.

1996 Maserati Ghibli

I'm drooling now.

Do you mind me being rude and asking what the running cost for her are like? I've always wanted a Maser but been to sacred to look at them!

Cheers Stuart

I'm not easily offended but the QP still offended me.

What was the owner thinking!

Well, the dealer wanted £3000+ for a cambelt change on mine many years ago . Someone I know did it for £500 and I supplied the parts . Mind you, the parts costs were also phenomenal.
