A mate had a Renault Avantime 3.0 V6 for a year or so - He enjoyed it, for the reasons above he got it on lease for £199/month!

I had a look at one of the 3.5 litre Initiale models some years ago. The design is quite interesting. Better than the Avantime, in my view. Lots of luxury and a good ride for long trips but obviously not much real driving fun to be had. Also, crap fuel consumption and emissions, even for the 3 litre diesel, which has a poxy 180bhp. They start at about £2500 for a 2002 petrol, so they make 166s look quite expensive .

Don't know if I'm allowed to contribute to this thread, being only an aspiring 166 owner, but the obvious one has to be Lancia Thesis. I assume that, as with the Thema and 164, it has much mechanical in common with the 166 but with more luxury and whacky styling. Midlifecrisis would approve of the di*sel version.

I love Quattroportes as well, but wouldn't expect them to be superior to a good 166. Many years ago I changed a 75 Cloverleaf for a Maser' 430 and, clock and leather aside, it wasn't nearly as nice a car.

Or how about a Citroen C6 (as long as it's not a new one!)?

Looks nice, but I'm lacking in funds and he has too many exclamation marks in his listing for my liking. Besides, having spent most of the last two weekends working on the 155 I feel it owes me a few miles! (sorry, couldn't resist just one)

Rare & daft I've always fancied a Thema 8.32 that would definitely be a car to own for a very short period to avoid bankruptcy

I heard a rumour that Lancia were planning another crack at the UK market later this year. I think they'll have to consider a name change on the Thesis!

Have benn in an 8.32 - Has the mafia feel and nice growl but the 2.0 16V Turbo Thema is actually quicker and a lot cheaper to run and maintain!

Re: So what car would persaude you out of the 166? (Warming contains Non Alfas!)

A current possibility, which hasn't been mentioned yet, is the new Honda Legend. The old one was a lardy beast but the new one is very good.

It has Honda's superb reliability, combined with a great 295bhp V6 engine, amazing AWD handling (it pulls almost the same g forces as the NSX sports car) and superb use of technology.

I love the way that they use noise cancellation through the Bose stereo to remove road and wind noise. Then there are the air conditioned seats and sensors to keep the car in the centre of the lane, the crash protection systems (where it tensions the seatbelt and brakes for you!) and a very clever idea which uses the onboard GPS to determine the position of the sun and increase the air con output on that part of the car .

And that's apart from loads of other kit, such as DVD Voice Activated Nav, radar controlled cruise, rear view camera, Xenon curve lamps and very nice hand-stiched leather. It's absolutely fully loaded and has only 2 options on the list (18" alloys and parking sensors).

I reckon it looks fine, too, and it's very rare in the UK. Top speed is 155mph (electronically limited) and 0-60 is in 7.2 seconds.
The main downsides are that it is not exactly fuel-efficient (combined 24.6mpg), comes only with a 5-speed auto box and is currently still well over £20K secondhand (new price around £40K).

Everybody stay calm. Don't panic. It's just the end of the world. It'll be all right, as long as we all keep chanting.

Re: So what car would persaude you out of the 166? (Warming contains Non Alfas!)

An Alfa 164 Q4 would really do the trick. I have been thinkin about swapping the 166 for a 164 Q4 a lot of times, but it havn't happened, yet.

A non Alfa swap would be the Subaru Legacy Spec B. A Boxer 6 is almost as good as a V6 And with 4-wheel drive!

The 7 series is ugly but I think this is quite classy. A little subtle agression, too, with the front lights and the twin pipes. Don't see it as bland myself.

The Legacy Spec B is one I looked at a couple of years ago. Also nice and quick but poor consumption again. You can pick an 05 up from about £7K now.

Re: So what car would persaude you out of the 166? (Warming contains Non Alfas!)

I may well have ended up in a spec B if my 3.2 didn't turn up when it did. It was that or a 9-5 Aero estate.
What are a great used buy now are the aluminium XJ Jags 2003 on, even the basic 3.0V6 is good (some are sub 10k) and can easily see 30mpg. Top of the range XJR's (400bhp) can be had for well under 20k. Only problem is they are very big cars and of couse auto only. Many people will also be put off by the 'old man image' but in the right colour combo they look great and underneath are a high tech car

Maserati QP, current gen.

Chrysler 300C SRT8 - if they fitted manual gears.

I guess a hearse - not much choice about letting go of the 166 then

Real world next car is looking like a Brera or 3.2GTVv6 or GT in 2-3 yrs.

Has anybody mentioned the VW Phaeton. I saw one recently and genuinely thought it was a nice car. It had a 3.2 engine as well! Apparently you can get one with a W12 engine

They are a bit like the 166 i.e nobody bought one brand new, so quite a rare sight.
