164 value

Hi,

There's a 164 3L V6 in Edinburgh that I pass on the bus every morning. It looks like it's been stood doing nothing for a while...and I'm thinking of approaching the owner to see what he/she wants for it (if anything).

What is this model like in general? Good points/bad points etc?

Any suggestions appreciated, especially any common faults that may be the reason for this one being laid up. One other thing, it's got a cherished plate on it - A11 FFA, which I've been advised is worth about £500 to a seller (by a reg dealer).

Cheers,

Iain

I was thinking that myself...not sure if the car's MOT'd though, and afaik it has to be to transfer a plate(?).

Re: 164 value

Unfortunately the car is worth very little and I would worry about it having sat for so long - Best guess would be a snapped cambelt! The reg. can be transferred without an MOT.

Re: 164 value

not that i'd advocate such a thing but it wouldn't be too hard to find another road worthy blue 164 to pop the plate on if you wanted to swap it

Re: 164 value

Might be a bit trickier finding an MOTd blue one with a VIN and engine number that matched the registration document though!

You'd really have to "ring" the car if you wanted to do that!

More seriously though. It will be a 12 valve, pre-catalyst V6. They weren't famous for snapping cam belts at all, but it is possible. The 24 valve cars were completely different animals with very fragile cam belt systems!

It is, as has been said, practically worthless and although the 164 was as good as any of its contemporaries (and better than many!) for rust, they CAN still rot.

To my mind, the 12 valve cars with no catalysts to worry about were the best bet. The 24 valve cars produced a bit more power but were a lot thirstier. Unless it's a Cloverleaf version, you could get surprisingly good economy on a run and the engines are pretty bomb proof.

If you decide that you want to have a look at it, post back on here and we'll try to put together a list of things to look at but my guess would be that it needs some welding for its MOT and it isn't worth the cost of having that done.

Re: 164 value

I've posted off a letter to 'the occupier', so I'll have to wait and see if I get a reply.

If the engine's alright, I wouldn't worry too much about a bit of welding. I used to own a '83 plate Cavalier

Cheers,

Iain
