1992 Alfa 164S wont start?

Ok I have a 1992 Alfa Romeo 164S and the car dosn't want to start. The fuel pump works, filter has been replaced, and everything has been checked. Now it works for a while after a new fuel pump is placed in but then it gradually begins to stop working. There is gas coming out of the hose where it enters the engine, but the car will not fire. All spark plugs are great, and everything works... except the engine. I checked the air filter, cleaned it, checked the sensors, they all work. It wants to turn over, but it just wont fire. Does anyone know what the problem could be? I did have to change the slave cylinder clutch hose, could I have knocked something loose? PLEASE I NEED SOME INPUT HERE. Thanks for all your help!

Re: 1992 Alfa 164S wont start?

Do you have a mechanical pressure gauge that you can "T" into the fuel line? It would be interesting to see what the fuel pressure is both when cranking and when running.

Also, I'm not familiar with the American-spec 164s of 192 vintage, but does it have a distributor? If so, mine has an irritating habit of melting rotor arms. For the few seconds it takes, it might be worth a check. I know you said you had a spark but sometimes, a weak spark is visible with the plug out but then "blows out" in the cylinder under the pressure generated in there.

If you have access to another ariflow meter, it might be worth trying to swap that - again, a quick and easy one. Also check the convoluted hose from the airflow meter to the plenum for splits in the bottom and also the crankcase breather hoses behind the plenum - also famous for splitting.

Finally, have you tried taking a spark plug out from each bank immediately after cranking but failing to start? It might be worth doing so just to see if they are "wet".

Also, it might be worth swapping the fuel pump relay (or temporarily briding it out).

At least there are plenty of shoulders to cry on in this forum!

Good luck!
