Air conditioning leak?

My 166 2.0 TS seems to be peeing itself - water streaming from what appears to be the bulkhead when engine running and after stopping....not sure where it can be coming from (matrix/joint?) as coolant level not dropped (yet?). Engine has been rebuilt very recently but I think this is a coincidence....

Thanks as ever for forthcoming guidance...
James

Re: Air conditioning leak?

Does this happen all the time or just when the aircon is on? If it's the latter, just dip a finger in the pool and smell it. If it's water, it's almost certainly condensation dripping off the evaporator and is perfectly normal. If it smells of antifreeze (compare it with what's in the cooling system header tank), you almost certainly have a problem.

water - but it's more of a stream than I would expect from condensation.......

Re: Air conditioning leak?

It has been remarkably muggy these last few days. It still could be condensate. Keep an eye on coolant and screenwash over the next few days (or drive with the aircon switched off for a day and see if it stops). I don't know the 166 but the 164 has a false firewall between the engine and the scuttle area where the heater box sits. That has drain tubes in it which can get blocked so maybe it's something to do with that?

Re: Air conditioning leak?

My BMW 328i I had before the Alfa used to do that......... If you aren't losing coolant it probably is condensation.

Re: Air conditioning leak?

next time you see it, back the car up and have a look.. if its cold, its unlikely coolant, so try the following

1) (official test) get a piece of white paper, and blott the liquid. if its green or blue, its coolant, yellow or brown is oil, red is power steering fluid. clear will be air con water

2) (only if you´re mad like me) dip your finger in it, if its cold and clear, with the consitancy of water, taste it (a tiny ammount) if it tastes like fresh water, its condensation.

it is possible for over a pint to be ejected on a hot day following a long trip.
