Alfa Romeo Brera 3.2 JTS V6 SV Q4

Ok, so the brera I was originally looking at has been sold but I wasn't prepared to pay nearly 10k on a 10 year old car. I've now got my eye on a 2 owner 50,000 miles V6 brera on a 2007 plate. Do these cars still come with the same timing chain problem as the 2.2 JTS SV and do they come with there own problems that I should know about? I'm having to travel 80+ miles to see this car so I want to be clued up before I go.

I think they can stretch, but not to the extent the 2.2 does. Chain had been done on mine but was higher mileage.

If the timing chain and ancilliary bits and pieces need to be changed on the 3.2 then I've heard stores of upto 3 grand for the job....

It's a lot rarer on the V6 but as above, it's a lot more expensive when it does.

WOW...........I did some pricing up on a new timing chain and ancillary renewal at my local Alfa (indy) garage in preparation had I bought the 2.2 JTS SV and they quoted £600-£700, how come it's much more for the V6?

I think it is a right sod to do.. The bulk of the cost is made up of labour, or so I've heard.

Mine was done, £1500 for chain, tensioner, auxiliary belt, filters oil etc. So half of what the horror stories would have you believe.

It was an independent Alfa garage. Not sure which one as it was done last year before I bought it. Invoice is at home, but I'm away at the moment. I'll hunt it out once back.

As long as it's been done properly, that's the important thing. I would think an independent would know their stuff..

same model and year as mine. I bought it 4 years ago with 30,000 on the clock. It has now done 74,000 with no problems. Make sure you change the oil and filter every 8-10,00 miles and not the 18,000 the book says.

Just the Alfa bits to repair are over a grand. And having dismantled mine, I can't see how you could do it properly in the car, so theres over a day to get the thing out - and similar back in I guess (mines still sat on the garage floor).

3 chains, two idlers, one crank sprocket, possibly 4 variable cam sprockets, 6 guides, 3 tensioners, 3 tensioner gaskets, new crank seal, while its out, be silly not to change the water pump and its seals and gaskets as it has to come off anyway, sundry sealants, new auxilary belt and tensioner too . . . soon adds up.

Never mind the chasiss bits, brackets, rubber bobbins that you discover on the way are knackered, perished, bust . . .

I think the 4 wheel drive or at least part of it can be expensive to repair. I drove one once with almost 200k on the clock and it was still mightily impressive.

The local independent who I use (who is brilliant) said keep on top of the oil changes and oil filter change once a year and the engine is pretty bullet proof. Any car can have niggles and scare stories but I can honestly say I've loved every minute of owning ours.

One place to keep an eye on is the coolant pipes going to the heater matrix from the rear pipe from the engine, there is a silly plastic elbow connecting this, it blew on mine on Saturday and filled the engine bay with what looked like smoke (it drips on to the exhaust manifold), scared the life out of me and the wife as it looked more like an engine fire( as the steam looked blue in colour). Ive made a temporary repair and been quoted £83 from the dealers for the replacement pipe including silly split elbow! This does look a weak point and looks to be used on the GM engine in the states and gives the same problems.
