Just liked this post Axe, but now I don't (scared)! My car is is 07 1.9 jtdm totally stock on 110k miles. I've had it 4 years and put 50k on. Presuming it's the M32 box?
I'm leaving it with the garage whilst on hols in August for a FULL service, cam belt, tensioners, water pump, subframe seal etc (was going to go dpf, egr, but decided not to just yet) gearbox has no noises or movement at all. I hadn't even given this issue a thought - I'm not right foot heavy (unless I need to!) so should I get the gearbox looked at or just re-oiled? Or carry on regardless as I don't seem to have any issues (touch wood)?
Obviously coming back from hols this is a big enough maintenance bill anyway.
(not tipping on hols might help!)
Keep tipping on hols (Karma :-) )
If you have no issues currently then the best advise I can give is don't do anything which would increase the power.
If you remove the DPF and blank the EGR then as a side effect you will increase the BHP and NM that goes through the gearbox (if your car is in perfect running order then the increase will be negligible so probably not such an issue)
From what I've seen on here (and through personal experience) the biggest problems occur when accelerating hard from low speed, or when trying to use the Torque to accelerate in 6th instead of dropping down into 5th or 4th. It's the torque that kills the M32 boxes. If it's in for work anyway it might be worth getting the box oil changed (search on here for type of oil and quantity, some people on here overfill their boxes and there defiantly seems to be less reported issues with boxes that have more than the recommended amount of oil)
this may or may not be relevant, but when my box failed I had been travelling up and down the A55 every week for a few months, I regularly used cruise control in 6th gear, when I would normally have dropped down a gear or two to get up inclines I just let the cruise control increase the power to drag the car up them (lazy driving) I'm convinced the increased load on the gearbox in 6th over many trips contributed to it's failure.
(But as I have already said I am a doom monger about the M32 box, it's one of my pet hates and I tend to go a bit overboard, If your car has the reg plate YJ57NLL then don't get it serviced, just trade it in :-( )
