I've been umming and arring about whether or not to make this post, so here we go......
A couple of weeks ago, Alfa Romeo very kindly loaned me a Brera 2.2JTS for a long weekend (at their expense), it arrived at 8.30 on the Friday morning and had been driven up from High Wycombe.
Instant reaction - "wow". Rosso red with a full leather interior and all the toys. Of course, it looked the dogs wotnots and when I eventually fathomed out all the controls.....off I went. Intial reaction - why do the revs shoot up to 3k when changing from 1st to 2nd?
Anyway - I got used to the car very quickly and drove it around town to get a feel for it. Of course, visibility was restricted; but that's expected in a car such as the Brera. Steering was very light, if a little vague and the characteristics of the huge wheels took some getting used to - please bear in mind at this point that I have a Cloverleaf that is coming up for 8 yrs old, so you are not preaching to the converted.
The cabin was lovely, everything was positioned very well, however I found on the onboard computer confusing after the ease of the 147's that I previously owned - but maybe with more time all would have become clearer.
I took the car over to the AO North East Whitby run out, but to be honest it was the first "real" drive out that I had had in it, so consequently I was a little concerned about putting it into a drystone wall at Rosedale.......and drove it conservatively; as I suppose anybody else would who had a £26k+ car on loan. The 2.2 had a knack to getting the best out of it, but I avoided the redline. I personally feel that its' looks deserve more BHP and I felt I'd get bored quickly with the "smaller" engine, but having said that, it was thoroughly enjoyable and not too thirsty.
When Monday afternoon came I was very sorry to have to hand it back and I think to myself, if I had all that cash to spend on a car, would it be on a Brera?
TOO RIGHT IT WOULD!
One point irritated me all the way through - why do the revs jump up,to over 3k when changing from 1st to second?
I initially thought it was my clumsy driving, but the car did it consistently over the 4 day loan period, from cold to warm.
I just thought iI'd share that with you.....
