Maybe it's part BMW I think I'm king image, but also it just came across as if it was trying too hard. The Alfa Spider just does the style thing so well as if it just comes naturally. Even stranger how when I saw the previous older version of the Z4 in red in the flesh today and that looked quite nice, a lot better than the newer one, hopefully I won't get shot down for saying that. I've sometimes wondered what owning a less common but nice car from the German rivals would be like, however if I did it would be purchased separate, in the Z4's case it would not replace the Spider.
Quite agree, a few years ago I had a test drive in a Z4 and was very disappointed, the front view still looks good I think, the newer ones with the hard top for some reason do not look the same.
I've been closely looking at Z4s myself recently, been looking at moving the Spider on for a good while now.
The restyled front and rear ends and the folding hard top that gives it a reasonable coupe look (I always said I'd never have another convertible after the PITA that the Spider's been) all caught my attention, as did the M Sport trim which most of them are. It's fast and frugal as well - most things are compared to the Spider.
I was never a fan of the original rag top Z4. I've never been a big BMW fan either, but am having to explore all possibilities because there is no perfect car for me out there.
As soon as the Spider got unveiled I knew straight away that I'd have one soon. There's no car at the moment I can say that about.
Other metal I'm considering: Subaru BRZ, Audi TT (black edition), Audi A5 coupe (19'' wheels), Merc C and E class coupes. None are perfect in my eyes, so it's a real struggle.
Maybe I should join the masses and get a shopping hatch and have done with it...
