I have the 1.9 with Qtronic, which is plenty lively enough for me. As others have noted, it doesn't have the Sport/Snow switch, but the box seems quite clever at guessing whether I'm pushing on or pootling around, so I don't miss it. Mine was a low mileage example (10k miles then, 20k now), so I'm content to leave EGR, DPF and mapping as is. Maybe re-think that one in a few years time.
I have a fairly rural commute, with longer trips at weekends, and get 38 to 39 mpg on a tankful, with 45 to 50 mpg on motorway journeys. Quite often carry 2 or 3 passengers, so it had to be 159 not Brera.
If your needs are anything like mine, the 1.9 Qtronic would be the best choice. I haven't felt this good about my car since the Saab 900 Turbo in 1986-88.
tha'ts a nice endorsement of the 1.9 Qtronic 159...
it really does depend on your needs/wants ..the 159 platform is a more accomplished car in many ways than the 156/147/GT which has lots of little niggles. it is a far more ''grown up'' choice..
although if speed and handling are even remotely important to you then it may be an idea to seriously consider the aforementioned re-map and DPF/EGR delete, this done on the 2.4 gives you 275BHP, perfect IMO for the size and weight of the 159, remember it will also improve economy and all the extra torque will make the car feel so much more planted.
and goes without saying removing the DPF and EGR will give you far more reliable car.
both are a good choice, however the ONLY reason you would buy a 1.9 over a 2.4 is price/ availability. the 2.4 returns better economy,is more powerful and more reliable the the 1.9, it also sounds a lot nicer than the 4 pot...and you could live with it without the re-map. I couldn't live with a standard 1.9 in a GT which is MUCH lighter than a 159, in a 159 150BHP must feel a little ''Meh''
one little curved ball for you..whenever this comes up I always throw a facelift 156 into the mix because....
same interior as the 159, which is lovely.
much lighter car hence better economy and performance.
same interior space
facelift is 159ish in looks and much nicer IMO than the pre.
better handing than the 159.
in the auto its a selespeed..not very reliable
as with all the 156 derived cars front suspension is made of chocolate.
cheaper to buy.
if I were a family man it would be a facelift 156 sportwagon lusso with a remapped 2.4 engine and a quaife, eibachs and bilstiens B12's and TI wheels...
