And it's gone..
So after about a week of checking my options and hunting around for a viable engine, I threw in the towel and took up the cash offer. Absolutely not the way I wanted my time with that car to end, but head rules heart. I don't actually drive much these days, but when I do it is important, and I need a reliable motor. Whilst are there are a few TBi engines around, it seems to none are sufficiently complete (i.e. no injectors, turbo, fuel pump, etc.) to be a straight swap. This meant either buy new (at significant cost) or bolting back on potentially damaged/flawed parts (at significant risk of repeated failure).
Had the initial estimate stuck, I would have put it back on the road. However, when we realised the Turbo and CATs were probably damaged, and clutch/DMF should also be renewed, I was back to square one in terms of economics. So, I made the call, and less than 24 hours later it was on the back of trailer. I've no doubt that with a bit of time and money spent on it, the car could be back on the road and making someone else happy. However, I have neither the time, or appetite for risk to go on that journey. At the very worst, there will be some huge Brembos and 19" Superleggeras on ebay within the week.
What next? Well I'm thoroughly sick of Turbos, this is my third engine failure. I came very close to an electric car (no moving parts!) as it would be fine for 90% of my journeys, but for the 10% not, and the 10% are the important ones.
So deposit is down on a Mazda6 Tourer, 2 Litre NA Engine (in red, of course!). Should pick it up in a week or two, and I shall try very, very, hard not to destroy that also.
So final post on my final thread on Alfaowner, and possibly my last Alfa.
So long and thanks for all the fish.
