Intermittant brake light failure

Recently had the dash tell me that the rear drivers side brake light had failed. Great - need to get a new bulb.
Next time I start the car there is no failure message and the brake light is working again.
I seem to be getting this intermittently will be driving for a while, then I get a failure message (always the same light). Indeed when the failure is message on the dash, the brake light is not working. It will then resolve itself with no interference at all and the brake light will be working again.
Any ideas on where to start to look?

I sometimes (like once per year) get this in my 156 - also the right rear brake light. It has always cleared up on its own very quickly, so I suspect it's just a loose connection. I just open the cover and clean everything and then squeeze it tight together again to be safe.

NicQ suggestion +1.

Check the connector that plugs onto the light unit. It's usually the earth connector gets burnt and needs cleaning and bending together slightly. The dirt/burnt one will be easily visible inside the connector if this is the problem.

I too had the burnt/ oxidized earth connector about 5 years back, on the left rear light cluster. I used sand paper to clean the connector and bend the metal piece upward. It worked for a while but issue came back after a few months. Finally I used a small piece of plastic to prop the connector up from behind, as the metal had too much "fatigue". Issue never occurred again since then.
