I had my rear door lock release fail about a year ago, and got round to sorting last month. I didn't hear a 'clunk' or anything, it got sticky over time, then failed.
Obviously not saying it's the same fault, but I replaced the whole door release mechanism. Absolute nightmare to take the door card off with the door closed, but it'd be easier in the front if it came to that for you.
I removed the door trim, door 'card' (metal plate behind trim), then broke the white housing off the back of the lock mechanism and jabbed a screwdriver in there for a few minutes until it unlocked. Not very technically, but it worked!
You could have a different (and possibly easier fault), could just be the release cable from the handle or something. Is the handle still under the same tension as before?
