Help 159 coolant warning but gauge at 90 and....

I don't have much luck with my car.
The drive home tonight was a normal 10 mile inside london, stop start event.
200 yds from home a VERY small stutter.
10 yds from home the display warns me something like "coolant temperature excessive, turn off engine and allow to cool"
I glance at the temp gauge which is at 90, exactly as it should be.
IMMEDIATELY the car shuts down, key fob releases, electrics off, engine off, lights off. Brakes and steering loose power assist (of course).
I am mercifully doing 3mph and drift to a halt in a space.

10 seconds later (whilst having a few choice words) I can restart the car, all OK and temp still at 90.

The car smells hot but all is OK , there is coolant in the reservoir.

Any Ideas anyone?

Radiator fan working? and you say the coolant level is up to the mark? Take it from there, and see how she runs next time? :

have you topped up coolant recently? my friend had the same problem in her Peugeot 1007 after her father topped the coolant up with pure 100% coolant which made the whole liquid too thick and the sensor went crazy. If not i bet its the faulty sensor. If its still under warranty, they should fix it in one day.
