Yesterday i was about to replace cambelt & waterpump (87000 Kilometers/4 years)...Just needed to move my caravan 10 meters, so hooked it on on the towbar & started to explain my kids where to observe when i would need to reverse...While doing this, the car was left in idle, and the screaching aux-belt, caused by a dying belt-tensioner, which also were to be replaced when doing the cambelt.
Suddenly there was a big silence...Engine had quit...I tryed to start her again, but found out instantly that she was not happy, with the starter not able to crank the engine....
I then look in the engine-bay & found that the generatorbelt was completly missing & nowhere to be found...So we pushed her in front of the garage and i started to dismantle...Only to be shocked when i removed the cam-cover..Where i was met by a broken cambelt-end
I then removed the (cant remember uk-word) aux-beltwheel at the crankshaft...To be even more shocked to find that the generatorbelt had been "eaten" by this wheel and pushed into the camshaft-wheel, hence totally blocking it and making a massive mix of generator/timing-belt that eventually broke the cambelt
Whats the chance of this...10 meters of driving from aux-belt and aux-tensioner...It can only be due to resonansvibrations from the tensioner/aux-belt with engine idling, that the belt of the generator/AC-compressor jumped the wheels..And then even more unbelievable unlucky that belt ended up where it did....
Today i then finally made my way to removevalve-cover...To discober everything looks absolutely ok down there
So now to order new gaskets & seals & put her back from the 1 zillin piexes shes in atm.
Has any of you guys ever experienced anything like this type of cambelt-breaking? Guess i must be lucky with no damage (from what i read, its VERY unlikely with any damage, when rockers hasnt broken), eventhough i still cant see how anyone can be SO unlucky, having this happening 10 meters of driving from safe haven
(Cant get Drag & Drop to work, but attached pics of the mess & the beautiful sight of as-new rockers & camshafts
