External Temperature Sensor replacement Brera
my outside temperature display went wild a couple of weeks ago. It was telling me that it was -10 degrees Celsius when it was actually warm and sunny. On starting the car it would show a sensible temperature and then drop like a stone. The result being that I always had an ice warning and my Climate Control wouldn't work properly - the aircon doesn't function as far as I could work out, probably in case it froze.
I read lots of very helpful posts here and tried checking the multiplug in the driver's door jamb (necessitating a reset for my windows) but it didn't help so I took the plunge and ordered a new sensor (thermistor?) from ebay. I decided to fit it last week and took photos so I could post them up here as a guide to help others.
I decided to go down the route of cutting the wires to the old sensor and soldering the new one on to the old wires and covering with heat-shrink (so minimal dismantling). I didn't disconnect the battery as I was using a gas powered iron. Getting the mirror glass off was a devil of a job but I got there in the end. Swapping the sensor was easy by comparison but, having put everything back together, the car now thinks it is a positively tropical 59 degrees Celsius - again the climate control doesn't like it and it is hard to heat the interior of the car now!
Does anyone have any ideas what I might have done wrong, or did I just get a bad sensor. I'm tempted to do it again and this time try it dry before soldering and putting the mirror glass back on. Any suggestions gratefully received....
