I think we should honestly summarise the fact that it is not clear what exact failure codes has came up for this period since you have no EcuScan to check it personally and you never go to diagnostics after ELM symbol gone itself.
In other words three previous ELM codes may differ from last 0013\0014 one especially for half a year period.
I still continue insist that 0013\0014 failure code connected to intake solenoid but the naked truth is we should not hurry up to replace it with single ELM appeared&gone itself. At least we should wait for repeating ELM.
Let us make some steps back.
What is exact feature in your car behaviour you do not like ???...
I feel a bit guilty and Im going to conquer the case.
Well basically back in May, the engine started to feel different - a deeper, throatier noise and just not as as powerful. It was so marginal though and it didn't trigger the EML or anything so I just did nothing and carried on. I presumed the exhaust was loose, rusted and when I went to get it MOT'd at the end of September, I asked them to look to see if they could see anything. The exhaust was fine but it failed on the emissions and they were suggesting the cat was damaged (failed with 0.2 CO reading), something I couldn't understand as the car is a 56 plate, 112k miles and I have never put the wrong fuel in or anything.
I used some cataclean, changed the plugs as they were due anyway and checked the air filter had actually been changed at the recent service. I then made sure the car was really hot for the free retest, bit it still failed. Rather than chasing my tail, I went to Power Italia in Basildon and got diagnostics done, costing £48 and they came back with the error codes "P0014 Positioning diagnosis of exhaust camshaft" and "P0013 Phase Variator Actuator on exhaust Camshaft" (I presumed PowerItalia used specialist Alfa diagnostics equipment given the price and that they are a specialist Alfa garage butit transpires that P codes only come from generic machines and there is some ambiguity to what they actually mean). I was told that it needed a new timing chain and a variable valve exhaust solenoid. As the mixture reading on the MOT was fine, this wouldn't have caused my car to fail so I was looking at a new timing chain, solenoid and a CAT which was crazy. On the off chance, I took it somewhere else to get MOT'd, somewhere with new machines, and it passed comfortably and as it transpired, it was the MOT centre's machine out of calibration and there was nothing wrong with the CAT - very annoying and when I went back to the original MOT garage to complain, they just shrugged it off.
I found GM solenoids online for £30 from America so I decided to change them first before rushing out and paying for a new chain. I did one at a time and the car ran much better after changing the exhaust solenoid but I put this down to me cleaning the intake solenoid as it looked in a worse state, there were what looked to me like a few carbon deposits (see picture attached). I ordered a new intake solenoid but it took a few weeks to come. In the mean time the car began to run not quite so well. I then changed the intake solenoid when it arrived and didn't notice any change after fitting it, although it does seem to have improved with a bit of running.
Over the last 6 months, the EML has come on a few times but it clears itself soon after. Some days the car runs better than others but I have never felt that the car would breakdown, nor has anyone else got in the car and questioned anything being amiss. Where I am at now - I don't think the car is fixed, I think the engine still sounds different but it is so marginal that I am not going to change the timing chain any time soon as I am not convinced that is the problem. The EML is not on, the car works and is nice to drive. I have no idea what the issue is, it could be minor, it could be major but I could spend a lot of money chasing my tail and never find the problem. If it is something major, I think it will get worse over time and be more apparent what the issue is. I could sell the car but I looked around before and I don't see anything better on the market without spending more money.
