possible Brera purchase - some issues
Hi all, looking to pick your brains a bit if I may. I went to look at a 2006 Brera today, it drove very nicely good history file, bodywork excellent for age. Mileage is around 65k full stamped service history. Receipts for steering rack replacement carried out in 2014. A couple of issues though.
1) The seller mentioned that the oil pressure gauge sometimes drops or fluctuates from its 'normal level' I didn't notice anything unusual on the 30 min test drive and no warnings on dash at all.
2) I carried out a history check online and one of the things I looked at was to confirm the stamped engine number was correct as per the check. Bit confused though as the 7 digit number given in the report was stamped on the lower section of the engine but top section showed a different 8 digit number. Are these numbers meant to be the same? or are they supposed to be different anyway? I don't think I have ever checked numbers on an engine when buying a car previously so not sure what made me look this time.
3) After the successful test drive, I parked up and without turning off the engine I popped the bonnet to listen to the engine. It sounded fine but there was a strange 'knocking noise' while idling. Neither myself or the seller could identify where it was coming from. The noise didn't increase or decrease when we revved the engine (it just drowned the noise out) and the vehicle was stationery - I know I'm being a bit vague but does anyone have any suggestions what it could possible be? Engine mounts? heat shield?
I was probably about to do a deal to buy the car but hesitated due to the above. The seller said he will get his mechanic to check it out on Monday but thought I would get some knowledgeable advice.
Thanks in advance for any help / suggestions offered.
