I am a little stuck with what to do. I went to Power Italia yesterday and spent £48 on diagnostics to get to the bottom of what's going wrong. It came up with fault code P0013 and P0014 and they told me that the timing chain needs doing and possibly the exhaust solenoid. Now I am hearing that it is P0016 for a stretched timing chain so I called Alfa Workshop, explained what has happened and I read them what was on my receipt "P0014 positioning diagnosis of exhaust camshaft & P0013 Phase variator actuator on exhaust camshaft", they said that the positioning diagnosis of exhaust camshaft did sound like the timing chain but they told me that they use proper Alfa diagnostic machines which don't give P codes so without going to them and getting more diagnostics done for £35, they can't really tell me.
Power Italia could well be absolutely right with their diagnostics, I don't know. I would rather not spend £700 changing the timing chain if I don't need to. Likewise the solenoids are £100 a pop so I don't want to be changing them if I don't need to (might be able to buy GM ones for £50 but they take a while to arrive). I will have a go at cleaning them but I think it is wishful thinking that a good clean would solve the problem. Likewise I don't want to spend another £35 on diagnostics when Power Italia could be absolutely right.
I am annoyed that I went to an Alfa specialist yesterday to get a definitive answer only to find myself today questioning the diagnostics and potentially having to get diagnostics done again elsewhere.
