First post on the forums, so sorry if I am being too longwinded or otherwise. I will learn soon enough
I bought a 2007 159 2.2 JTS secondhand, and ever since I bought it (6 months ago) I have noticed a rumble in the steering when turning the wheel to the left at low speed. This wasn't a big problem, as I assumed it was either old bushes or or possibly a slight problem with the pump, but a week ago it started making strange grumbling noises after I had turned it off and gotten out of the car. Short shudders every 30 seconds or so.
I took it to a power steering specialist (this guy was recommended by a friend of mine who collects classic Maseratis and Ferraris, so I was inclined to trust him with my fairly modern Alfa :P ), and he said that he hadn't really seen it before. He thought it is most likely the rack, as the grumbling only happened in one direction, but he also noticed a whine while accelerating and that, combined with the noises after it was off, made him think it could also be the pump. He is pretty baffled by it.
Any ideas guys? I am only 20 and bought the 159 as my first car because it is one of the most beautiful cars I ever saw and I love it, but I don't have the money to be changing steering racks -_- people speak of new reservoirs and stuff, could that help me in my case? I want to try every cheap fix first in case they work. Help me guys! Show me that my friends were wrong about Alfas being beautiful money pits! :P
