Be careful out there Alfa owners

Having driven my new Brera to 71k I finally get the engine warning... code says i need a cam chain.. Fine.. fair enough, I expected it well before this mileage. So first I go to my trusted garage who says its going to cost at least 500. Well not knowing a cam chain from a bike chain and looking at a not insignificant amount of my earnings, I get out the Alfa Romeo Magazine and look up the well known Service and Repair firms.. you know the ones they say have been in the business since 1900 and are the UK experts etc etc . Well I ring these people and one after another, they tell me its going to cost over a grand and one old chap just sighs and says ' you realise you're looking at 2k..' but possible higher . I just hung up on this idiot. This was one of the biggest names in Alfa Service firms, so Be Careful out there Alfa owners.

I ended up going back to my servicing garage.. Motormech in Birmingham
They did the whole thing plus a Solenoid including VAT for 540. Motormech is a family business who are passionate about italian cars,
witness the line up of Alfas and Fiats out front waiting on a service.

I am sick to the back teeth of rip off mechanics who feature in Alfa Romeo Magazine .. don't be taken in by them. Make sure you only lose the cost of a phone call.Oh yes, I nearly forgot, UK dealers are even worse. even charging 70 just to find out what's wrong... please !
Be careful out there Alfa owners.

No one in their right mind would use a main stealer for a chain.
If it's the 2.2 Vectra engine you've got like me, most garages will have done the job at some point - just not on the Alfa-tweaked version.
Mine cost 370 at my local back-street garage.
I gather the V6 is considerably more.

Brera 2.2 JTS

The cost also depends on how many parts are changed along with the chains.
