Thought I would post in this section in case anyone is thinking of a change.
I had a Brera, in V6 Q4 form and now she has gone
Reason behind it... fuel economy and seeing as I was spending £75-80 a week in fuel (avg 23-24mpg), it had to be replaced with my now first Diesel Alfa, equipped with a 2.0 170 at the helm. Having it for over 2 weeks now, it's roughly now £25-£30 a week (avg 55mpg).
Now the Brera is definitely quicker than G, especially in the first two gears (obviously) but in third gear the G does pull like a train thanks to all the torque being released. I do miss the launch on the Brera most performance wise (and of course the sound!!). Looks wise goes to the Brera, already had a few comments saying it was better looking, have to agree but then this is a 5 door hatch..... the other a coupé so ...., but still looks nice in Veloce trim. Gearbox and brakes are really good, steering is okay, you don't 'feel' the road and it kinda 'floats' when in a neutral position, difficult to explain but nothing I would call bad.
Interior wise was a surprise though, It is quite spacious, nice design and layout and generally a nice place to sit in, Instrument panel could be a bit better as well as the red displays, not that it is bad per say but stepping in a golf/passat (I know..) the screens were super clear and just looks more modern and nice dare I say it. I still prefer the cabin of a 159/Brera where the quality of the materials are better, but not by much really. I also thought the lack of a foot rest would bother me but you can tuck you foot just left and slightly under the clutch without it being uncomfortable or anything.
Handling, not had any issues with the G, grips just fine but then I don't thrash it around corners, no under-steer action just yet
, it does feel pretty planted. Comfort wise goes to the G, but only by a smallish margin than the Brera, seats are also good.
The DNA toggle switch I actually like! if you just want to waft along and be fuel efficient, 'N' it is. Otherwise 'D' for fun but expect 5-10mpg less. Not really sure what changes are with 'A' mode, I guess the Traction control/VDC etc is just extra sensitive.
A few minor gripes:
Volume on stereo is too shallow, not easy to grasp.
Buttons on steering wheel are a little unresponsive (might just be mine).
Not used the cup holders yet but I read they are too small.
Rear parking sensors should be standard.
Diesel tappet sound is a little nosier than I would like it to be, just sounds a little
unrefined compared to competition but it does perform well!
Door pockets should be lined with felt or rubber like material to reduced movement sound.
I am missing the Brera and wished I could have kept it! I also would have gone for another 159 if it was as fuel efficient as the G but it's 10mpg out sadly. But I am happy with the G, still looks better than it's competition being nearly 6 years old now and still has some of that Alfa touch which I thought may have been lost. I still look back at her and it still make me want to just go out for a drive.
I might even do another 'Interior Modifica
, the next chapter'
