so seems like the turbo is slowly dying. It's a bit smokey on start up and gives a plume of smoke under full throttle. took the air inlet pipe off the turbo and there is some play on the compressor wheel too. So with these symptoms it is also using oil, generally needs a 500ml top up every 2000 miles or so.
So the question is... replace with like for like... or upgrade (please say upgrade
Been looking around and have found out that the turbo is a Garrett GT17V, I have the 1.9JTDM 159 from 2008 150bhp. If I were to keep the same turbo then I would probably just buy a new cartridge and recondition the currently fitted turbo.
Ideally I would like to upgrade (providing it is not too much headwork!) on this website (https://www.btnturbo.com/parts/model/alfaromeo/159.aspx
) It shows that the 1.9 159 between 2009-2011 has the same turbo with ball bearing rather than journal bearing, so that would be the easiest upgrade..
The 2.4 has a Garrett GTB20V VNT.
And final option would be to source some parts and make a hybrid turbo. So whats peoples opinions?
The car has recently been remapped, EGR blocked off and DPF deleted. So I know that it would need to be remapped again for option 2 and 3.. but how about option 1?
Would the Garrett GTB20V VNT be a direct swap? And does the 2.4 have a larger exhaust diameter ?
Would appreciate any ideas and thoughts!
