I have a conundrum - I am getting a new car for weekend drives and the like (not commuting, keeping my Mito for that) and I am torn between the Brera and the GT. I want the 3.2l V6 regardless.
The way I see it:
- the Brera looks amazing, the GT looks great
- is a bit more modern, possibly more reliability issues with the GT?
- road tax is a bit more in the Brera (£500 vs £280 roughly)
- the Brera has the GM V6 as opposed to the Busso V6 in the GT
- the Brera is a bit more expensive
I'm looking at something between 4k and 6k. If I go for the Brera I'm probably looking at a car that's done around 80k miles for 6k, whereas for a GT that's done 80k I think I'd be looking at around 4-5k.
I'm really torn as to what to go for, I think I'm just going to have to go with my heart I think - the problem is my heart wants the Busso V6 with the Brera body
What would you guys do? Any alternative ideas?
Looks it's really down to personal preference i prefer the Brera
It's more modern with higher build quality, easily on a par with anything the germans were doing at the time, the interior is also very good and well put together, very unlike the typical Alfa fall to apart stereotypes, i personally think the interior is noticeably better than the GT's
Road Tax is IMO a non issue in 2017 it's going to be £140 for both cars i believe, no more c02 based so v6 owners will be well happy all round : )
There's nothing wrong with the GM unit, it's smooth, flexible and generally low maintenance and reliable. As for noise, any multi cylinder engine will sound great with a sports exhaust, all v6's will sound good with a louder sporty exhaust fitted. Some cars have them fitted from the factory whereas others are setup for quiet cruising and have large silencers that keep the noise levels right down. The basic point however is any 6 has the ability to sound great, you just need a sports exhaust and off you go, as to which sounds better with a sports exhaust is again subjective and even the same engine with two different types of sports exhaust can sound quite different.
The busso is a very well regarded engine and can trace it's history back decades, it also looks amazing under the bonnet, that history and look will always make it the fans favourite, no v6 from GM, Ford, etc will be able to compete with that history or those looks !!, that does not however mean they are bad engines, from a purely technical point of view it's a far more advanced design and is in my opinion a good v6, it just lacks the history and sublime looks of the busso, and these things are important in an Alfa
I think you should drive both, the brera is RWD via a rear biased 4 wheel drive system, it's also heavier, which is the price you pay for 4 wheel drive and the much more solid build.
The GT is lighter, with the traditional alfa v6, the price you pay is it's more maintenance intensive and not as well built with FWD....
Like you said the best car would be Busso + 159/Brera body a GTA version of the 159/Brera with a 3.7 busso would have been quite something but alas that never happened nor did the masser v8 or twin turbo GM unit, a shame but the perfect alfa has not yet been made although the 8C and Montreal come pretty close in my mind
GTV/159/156 are nice too
