After having now owned my new Brera for 2 months I thought it was about time I put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) with my thoughts about the car.
This is my first Alfa, and as well as being so excited, I must admit to being slightly apprehensive as the time drew nearer to collect the car from the dealer. I couldn’t imagine anything worse than when you’ve been waiting weeks for your new car, it turns up and it’s not quite everything you’d hoped for! I need not have worried as even the sun was shining as I pulled on to the dealers forecourt to see my new Brera sitting waiting for me. It looked simply amazing – I was literally lost for words, despite having test driven the Brera, drooled over the sales literature, and spent hours looking at pictures on the internet, I had never seen anything with four wheels look so fantastic!
I’d gone for the 2.4JTDM (I need the diesel as I do 20-25K miles every year) in Alfa Red (what else?) with black leather, 7 hole 18” alloys, Sat Nav, Phone, CD, Visibility Pack and Xenons. As I drove away from the dealers I immediately knew I’d chosen the right car. The whole car felt so tight, no rattles or knocks, and it drove so smoothly. Straight away the car started to do what it does best - turn heads! Even the guy in the next road who drives a Bentley GT turned 180° as he walked his dog as I drove past!! I have lost count of the number people that have come up to me and commented on the Brera – usually along the lines of ‘that’s f***ing gorgeous’!!
My initial impressions of the car were that it was very comfortable, some road noise (but what do you expect from 18" wheels!), high speed handling seemed better than low speed. Also the engine was very tight and the gearchange somewhat notchy, and the fuel consumption was not as good as I’d hoped for – the first tank returned about 30mpg. However, 3,000 miles later, the engine has loosened up nicely, the gearchange has lost 90% of it’s notchiness and the fuel consumption on my last tank was over 38mpg! Yes there are the usual few little niggles like the alarm going off occasionally for no reason, and the sat nav being painfully slow to operate, and how many huge paint chips has the car got already!! But overall it’s just superb and I'm absolutely thrilled with it! I’ve certainly never owned a car that puts such a big grin on my face every time I walk towards it!!
Look out for a few photos of the car in the Just Images section….
