159 1.9 JTDM economy

I wanted to ask if anyone has any suggestions as to how I might improve the fuel economy of my 159 16V JTDM (150).

I had it remapped last October to delete the EGR, which is the single best thing I have done with it since I got it. At the time, I had it remapped for economy as I've never been impressed with the fuel range of it, and I'm happy with the power. Besides it's given trouble, and the last thing I wanted to do was increase the engine power and run the risk of more problems. I didn't remove the DPF.

It did make a difference, to the extent that it was doing very nearly 600 miles per tank, mostly open-road driving. However, recently and for no apparent reason it has plummeted to about 500 in the same driving conditions. I've changed the oil, which made no difference (as if it would have).

I'm baffled by this.

I would not recommend you to use 5th&6th gears for speeds less than 100km/h for fuel economy reasons.
If not you have to be familiar with M32 gearbox failure thread here soon.

I dont think I ever got much over 500 miles out of a tank when I had a 1.9 JTdM 159. You must be starting to drive it with some spirit, keep it up.

Mine has just had a service and cambelt change and somehow improved 15% - no different journeys or driving technique. Could the new cambelt help or maybe better oil ?

Whatever it is i'm very pleased

How obviously check the tyre pressure, air con will also affect it (but not that much!), I always try and keep above 1,500rpm to help the gearbox. Dpf removal will definitely help, will reduce back pressure on the engine (and free up the turbo), and stop regens ( where it literally throws pure diesel down the exhaust to burn off soot), I reckon it helped around 2mpg when I had mine removed.
I'd mainly look at shorter journies as a culprit though.

I must be one of the lucky ones by 159 gets really good mpg, could probably get 700 to 800 miles out of a tank.

I used to get that when it was my main business car, now I do more short journeys, it's cut it by 100-150 miles off a tank.
