159 - choice of diesels?

Hi guys - I'm in the market for a practical (compared with my GTVV6!) family car and a 159 SW TI ticks all of my style and cost boxes. The 1750 TBi may well be my first choice but they are rare as hens teeth (are there any in the NE?) and at the top end of the budget for now. So a diesel is looking most realistic but I was initially confused by the choice. However, after a bit of reading around I'm concluding that the 2.0 (with F40 gearbox) is the one to go for. Fewer DPF & EGR issues. I like the idea of the 2.4s power and noise but is it noticeably heavier and thirstier? I know there is a fair bit of opinion already out there but I would appreciate your latest thoughts.

(And if you know of any in the NE please shout up!)

That's the one to go for, map it and you'll get 2.4 power levels (which can obviously get mapped higher too), but the 2.0 probably has better weight distribution, mpg and fewer issues as you point out! Enjoy!

Any spelling/ grammatical errors are purely there to annoy!

I've had my 1.9 for 4 and a half years with no issues to speak of. Its now on 107,500 miles, maybe I was lucky, or maybe if you get a clean one with FSH and really keep on top of servicing this is what happens - either way enjoy if and when you get it.

Steer clear of the 1.9,

Nothing wrong with the engine, but the M32 gearbox is the weak link. (and as they get older they will be getting closer to falling apart, Not saying they will, but it must be more likely)

(I had a bad experience with it)

The 2.0 with the F40 gearbox seems very good,
I've had mine for 3 weeks now and economy is better than the 1.9 and the performance of the 170Bhp 2.0 is as good as my old remapped 1.9 (almost)

not looking at getting the 2.0 remapped yet.

Also the EGR & DPF on the 2.0 don't seem to have any horror stories on here like the 2.4 and 1.9 do.

As the day goes likes this.

I think you have nailed it 1st time - 2.0 JTDM with the F40. I went for the newest 2.0 JTDM I could find foolishly thinking that most issues would be cured. DPF - sorted EGR - Sorted, Gearbox not really. Only Alfa could resolve the M32 issue with the F40, then take a backward step by fitting the c635 gearbox. Part of the price for owning such a fabulous looking car!
