Returning Alfa parts

I recently reported a slipping clutch on my 159 to my Alfa Specialist in London. I booked it in and he ordered in the parts. But subsequently I have been unable to make the clutch slip. So I cancelled my appointment. He got shirty with me as he said he had ordered in the parts especially, and he could not return them. and as my car is a 3.2 Q4, he said he'd never been able to use the parts on someone else's car. Is he right; he can't return unused parts to Alfa??

Sometimes if you have a car that isn't part of the mainstream, possibly like your Q4, then sourcing parts and not being able to use them can be a bone of contention with the garage - plus he's also missed out on the chance to charge you the labour for fitting as well...! Q4s are rare if I'm thinking right, so the chance to try to sell them on can be difficult.

If you were convinced enough that your clutch was slipping that you booked it in,

then whats to say next week you might think it again?

Might be worth coming to an arrangement with the garage, pay for parts only now (get them to hold them and they are not out of pocket)

when it needs doing (either next week or in 6 months) pay labour only?

Just my 2c's

Sorry cant help on original query, but sometimes on slipping clutches they sometimes slip less in warmer weather. When the cold dampness comes back it may start slipping again.

Handling charge can be up to 20% and sometimes more. Unusual to be no refund for a big client.

Man up and buy the clutch off the garage, you authorised it's purchase. Put it in stock as you'll need it one day and one day you may need the garage too so not ****ing them off over a bob or two ain't worth it.

Yes Pal, you asked them to sort a problem out, they didn't ask you for a deposit and ordered the goods on good faith. Show a bit back and pay for what you asked for., you're a good Guy, that's why you drive an Alfa. Now if it was a wishbone.......

Thanks all. I will take your advice and pay for the parts for now. Only fair.
