rattling sound in 2.4 210HP 159 from inside the engine [SEE VIDEO]
I need your advice.
I have a very well preserved, 95.000km 2.4 jtdm 210HP 159, 2008 make.
I have a strange problem that my mechanic did not come across yet. As a result he wants to open the engine, remove the block and all. That means huge expenses and I want to avoid that if possible.
Can you please give me your opinion (I know it's a long shot as troubleshooting cannot be done "over-the-internet", but please help me out here - anything you can think of).
Here are the symptoms.
When engine cold-starts everything is ok. It ignites instantly (although a fix (firmware update) was applied to this engine as engine misfired when cold - this was done 1 year ago). When engine warms up it starts to produce rattling sound at certain rpm. This sound occurs only when passing 2000 rpm (between 1900-2300 rpm to be exact). It happens when you accelerate (going pass 2000rpm) or decelerate (foot off throttle, just letting the car brake and fall below 2000 rpm). This sound occurs when stationary or when driving.
The sound is unnoticeable until you open both front windows and drive trough a tunnel or something that produces echo. Then it sounds like rattling (or at least that's what I hear). No loss of performance, nothing. Car pulls off great.
What has been done so far:
Timing belt was removed and examined. Everything seems fine. The sound apparently comes from inside the engine.
My mechanic says that it is probably broken or damaged piston or faulty oil pump. But another dealer (official dealer) says that 159 never had problems with either of those. NO known cases of bad pistons nor bad oil pumps.
Mechanic now wants to remove the engine block and open the engine to see what is happening. This is huge expense and also I would have to leave the car with them for about 5-10 days.
I understand that they need to remove the block in order to diagnose the problems, and I will eventually have to do this - but before I sell my kidney and start drinking heavily I would ask you to share some thoughts / experience with similar issues.....anything...!
Thank you in advance!!
