Steering Rack Rust Problem - Some Help/Advise
I'm sure many of you know about the steering problems on the 159/Brera's.
I have attached some pictures of a common rust problem on the steering rack bar & inner tie rod. This happens to about to about 8/9 out of 10 racks that develop a steering rack problem!
Very few racks with this problem can be repaired/re-manufactured. As the rust/pitting is to severe to re-polish the rack bar.
If you buy a used rack, always ask to see the "passenger side" rack bar and check for rust.
If you buy a re-manufactured rack ask if the core unit suffered from a rusty rack bar. If it did, it'll probably fail before the warranty ends?
If you feel you are having steering problems, you can do these checks yourself..... As the main rack seal is towards the passenger
side of the rack remove the passenger side gaitor. If loads of black fluid comes out you know the seal has already failed. If your rack bar is starting to look like the pictures attached, you will be having a problem soon.......
Also check for any water or moisture in and around the gaitor and rack bar, which may be causing a future rust problem.
If all looks okay, but the gaitor back on with two plastic ties.
Hopefully this information may help?
