159 - Internal Mirror Working Correctly?

I have recently purchased a Alfa 159 and am wondering how the internal auto dimming mirror should work (never had one before).
In the mornings when I drive to work it is still dark. If the mirror is on auto then any car behind me causes the mirror to go very dark. Yet on the way home the sun is, at this time of year, low on the horizon and often shines straight in the back window. When this happens the mirror does not darken and I am left having to tilt the mirror up to avoid being blinded.

My question is should it be so sensitive to low level car lights yet not react when bright sun is behind you. Is the mirror working correctly?

Based on ambient light and light from behind - so it takes contrast into account and won't darken in bright conditions.
