I loved my 6 1/2 years in my Ti and like you was not planning to keep it that long; three years in my case.
Absolutely nothing I could afford tickled my fancy for one reason or another. Funnily enough the Golf R was on my radar too and ultimately dismissed as being not really what I needed day-to-day and I knew the real world economy would be dire whether I thrashed it or not.
I also had a trebling of my daily commute to consider, going from 10 to 30 miles each way on the dreaded M60 daily festival of grid-lock, 50mph cameras and routine delays. A BMW would be economical and sensible but I couldn't bring myself to have one.
In the end I plumped for petrol-hybrid (which isn't as economical as a 320d) Lexus IS300h. Overall, I'm quite happy with it. It's a bit different looking to the default choices, well-equipped, super-quiet, very smooth and planted on the motorway. It's already picked up a few annoying stone chips so I think paint is a bit soft and it doesn't make me smile and go for it on a fast, sweeping country road. The handling is a bit anaemic but I don't worry about that when I'm stuck on the M60 or just slogging down the M74.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.
2008-15 New 159Ti experience: overwhelmingly positive. Reliable and fun over nearly 100k.
