Stiff gearbox please help.

My 159 has a stiff gearbox, what to do to smooth it down?

Drain and replace the gearbox oil with redline mt90, slightly over fill ~200-300ml with whats recommended in the manual. It may then (gradually) improve with use, mine certainly did.

If it's an M32 gearbox (fitted to 1.9 JTDM models), get it checked out as there may be some bearing issues there. Listen out for a subtle whining sound when driving along whether clutch engaged or not, in any gear from about 20mph or even coasting in neutral.

When replacing oil, use 3-litres of Fuchs Sintofluid gearbox:

Use three litres rather than the recommended lesser amount. The gearbox has a breather so will chuck out anything unwanted. The problem is, the gearbox is poorly designed and oil flow to some of the bearings etc is not good enough. This is the Alfa specialist, Autolusso's, recommendation for oil replacement. Upon a full M32 gearbox rebuild, I have had no further issues 14,000 miles on. Touch wood!

Rockin' all over the road!

The sinto fluid comes in several grades, use the gl4 spec as the gl5 is for boxes with a hypoid diff and can be too slipery for the syncros to work properly and can give a notchy gear change.
Or use the Redline mt90 but I noticed it has got very expensive and not many places have stock of it now.
And as said above use 3 liters insread of the standard 2.3 for the m32 box

I replaced the factory oil in mine with Castrol syntrans with great results. It wasn't an instant improvement but after driving about 500 miles the feeling of stirring treacle and it felling like a barrier when shifting up to second and third has pretty much gone. It is now much smoother and I would definitely recommend it. I have a 2008 brera s with 54k miles on it by the way.
