I'm considering either the 1.9 or 2.4 159 TD, out of the 2which one in the real world is better. I always tend to go with the bigger is best attitude but wondered on what other peoples opinions are, whats the performance like and MPG ?
I've a two month old, 3,500 mile 2.4 JTDm Sportwagon and love it. I test drove the 1.9 but found it a bit too slow for my tastes.
The 2.4 is considerably heavier so the 1.9 possibly handles a bit better, but the 159 is such a good handling car in the first place the performance to me was a bigger issue. The 2.4 also has 500 more rpm to play with so has a longer power curve.
As for fuel consumption I'm returning around 31-32 mpg average at the moment and this is improving with mileage. My understanding is that the 2.4 hits the high 30's around 8,000 miles or so (not as good as my previous 156 2.4 which easily sat in the low 40's). The 1.9 might be a bit better but I suspect the fact that you would have to work the engine harder to get any performance will bring the consumption quite close to the 2.4.
Agree with Fraser, I have the same 2.4 in my Lancia in France, and just for the sound of the 5 cylinders, its smoothness and torque, I would never buy a 4 pots 1.9. I tried the 159 in 1.9 and honestly coming from a 2.4 left me wondering if I was trying a "tractor", I then tried the 2.4 and then
Don't hesitate if you can afford it 2.4 and nothing else.
Consumption 35-40MPG (converted from L/100Km) the map is modified and I don't hang around on the twisties in the south of France
