Tyre Noise or? - Alfa 159 Pirelli P1
i'm trying to narrow down the cause of a drone - helicopter type noise coming from the front of the vehicle.
13 months ago, i had worn out Conti MC5's 235/45 swapped out for a brand new set of Pirelli P1's 225/50 on my 159 2.2 JTS, 17" Multispoke Rims.
Can't complain about the grip with the Pirelli's but shortly after i got them i noticed at speeds of 60-80 km/h or over there would be a oscillating noise in the cabin which sounds like it's coming from the front. I learned to deal with for the most part since i wasn't driving it as much, but now i've noticed it a bit more especially with the radio turned down and windows up.
It seems like its road speed related as it's more tolerable at about 100km/h +, but can be heard more/less sometimes depending on surface.
Have gotten to a steady speed of 80km/h, put it in neutral and let it roll to a stop to which you can still hear the noise until it slows down to about 45 km/h and under
Key points i need to rule our before i resort to changing a wheel bearing
1 - i haven't had the tyres rotated yet, got them 13 months done about 15000 kms on them short trips <20km mostly. Will do this first!
2 - When i got the tyres i was told 3/4 wheels were buckled, not sure how bad but it can't be that bad.
3 - vehicle handles fine, no noticable shakes or vibrations, just the annoying noise which is seemingly from somewhere in the front tyres
4 - tires don't appear more worn on the inner/outer edges, i'll have a better look soon.
5 - The noise is still heard when turning left and right, no difference.
6 - Jacked the car up on both front sides, grabbed each wheel from bottom and top and felt no shake. Spun them around, no strange noise when comparing either front wheels.
Google search and AO search doesn't give me much on any Alfas with Pirelli P1's
Need some ideas here!
