Alfa 159 - Rear centre ashtray fix

Don't know if anyone else has this issue, but my rear centre ashtray was constantly open and wouldn't stay shut. Looks like bad design to me, but a very simple fix...

All I did was change the shape of the ridge on the top of the ashtray, it then sits more comfortably and securely in the closed position, which means it doesn't open when you drive over a bump.

Here is a photo of the ridge, with front edge sanded down...

Next job, the loose glass in the drivers door...

Take care.

Yes I had this problem as well, and assumed that a spring had come loose.

It could be done in place, but much easier to undo the screws at the two top corners and take the whole unit out to see how it works.

The bit to modify is the shark fin, in the top of the little flap inside, that runs in a slot at the top of the housing. With the door closed, I marked the fin at the end of the slot, so I'd know where to cut the step. I cut mine a bit steeper than Nathon's pic - about 45 degrees - but wouldn't want more than that or, far from keep opening, it would never open.

Thanks Nathon. A nice quick fix.

It's very common.

The springs that hold it shut come loose and stop it from shutting:

That other thread talks about some springs to hold it shut, but actually the above 'mod' is much neater. The spring for the inner lid does both jobs: holds the notch we made up in the slot to keep it fully shut, then as it opens the spring pulls the lid up to lever it fully open.
