LONG post alert!
In the hope that this helps someone identify a potential or current issue with their Alfa, I'm posting my first Alfa experience. It's been a stressful time but I absolutely love the car and don't want to quit! Any advice welcome on the on-going MAF stutter.
I bought an 07 reg Alfa 159 Lusso 1.9 JTDM in September.
It's my first diesel, my first saloon, and my first car over 1.6l so I was a bit naive, really. The test drive went fine and nothing about the car made me nervous.
Problem 1: After a few days, the car entered limp mode. The garage identified a blocked DPF. They did a manual regen and problem solved.
Problem 2: A couple of weeks later, I asked my local garage to look into a stutter/hesitation/judder/power loss when accelerating. It would occur around the 2k Rev range if I drove the car conservatively and would always occur after the car had got up to temperature. The garage fitted a blanking plate to the EGR. This seemed to improve the stutter but not completely solve it.
Problem 3: Limp mode again with "Get engine checked" warning.
I decided to take it to Alfatechnico and get them to look into the problem and fix a couple of other things that needed doing. They identified the EGR as being a problem. It was "a cheap Chinese component sold for about £10 and was probably contributing to a lot of issues". The inlet manifold was missing 3 of the swirl flaps and was gunked up badly. After replacing both components they added a new MAP sensor, a cleaned MAF and throttle body. I got my car back and it was still stuttering
However, the car felt much better to drive so I was happy with the improvement.
After doing some research myself, I identified the MAF as the likely culprit. I unplugged the MAF and hey presto - the stutter was gone! Result! All I needed was a new MAF. For a few weeks I kept cleaning the MAF with CRC electrical contact cleaner, as that seemed to help. Finally, I ordered a new Bosch MAF.
Problem 4: After a 45 minute drive with no issues. I leave the car for 30 mins and when I return and try to start the car; I get a horrific clattering from the engine (bag of spanners) and eventually the car dies. Stranded, I get towed to AFH1 -Alfa specialist garage.
Tests showed low compression initially in all cylinders. This was a false reading and when tested later (after much investigation), it was found to be only 1 low on compression. Further investigation finds a shard of metal in the cylinder along with pitting and scarring.
I got my car back yesterday - running fine again apart from the stuttering was still there, of course
No problem, I thought - I'll install the new MAF and I'll be able to enjoy the car at last!
Nope!... New MAF installed but stutter remains. In fact, it no longer waits for the engine to get up to temperature, it now stutters immediately when accelerating.
If I unplug the MAF, the ride is Perfect! So close yet so far! Gutting
Hope it helps someone in the future! Any ideas, please let me know
