Gearbox Oil Changed - Fixed 1 Problem Caused Another?

Since we bought my wifes car every now and again the last 5 mm of the throw into 2nd gear has been difficult. The car is 2011 with just 45k miles on it. So having done some research Ive just had the gearbox oil changed to Redline MT90 - the result being the occasion difficulty into 2nd has been virtually cured - great!

Well not really as the entire throw into 2nd first thing in the morning ie when cold is now very tight. To be honest I'm puzzled as MT90 is 75w and so should have the same cold start viscosity as the standard oil recommeded by Alfa.

Any ideas or explanation gratefully received

Thanks in advance

I'm not too sure if this is the problem from your description but make sure to check any gearbox bushings and fixings. If these are excessively worn, loose or missing it can make selecting gear difficult. Check your connecting points of the gear selector for wear as well.

75W has a very broad range, best look at the cold viscosity between the two.

MT90 is recommended in VW circles when there are second gear crunches due to a worn syncro mesh. It is known for being a bit stiff when cold but good when warm.
MTL may be better as it is 70-80 but wont provide as much protection for the syncros. Another option could be drain out half the MT90 and add some MTL for an in between mix?
Not ideal as it isn't the cheapest but still an option non the less.

Thanks for the ideas.

I guess its not the end of the world as we live on a relatively steep hill so setting off in 1st and then at 2k revs changing into 3rd seems to work. By the time we are at the bottom of the hill the change into 2nd is fine. I was just concerned about wear/damage with the change into second feeling so tight.

I will get the linkages checked just to be sure
