Yikes ... 159 saga
I've been reading the posts here for some time but recent events have caused me to want to post ... at least for some support and helpful suggestions, and maybe to help others.
I've had my Alfa 159 1.9 JTDm Lusso SW for nearly three years now. On an 07 plate, I have had the usual fixes in my ownership: timing belt, front disks etc plus some strange ones too (power steering fluid and reservoir issues). It's been a wonderful experience. Such a great drive, comfortable, quick for a 1.9 diesel and gorgeous to look at. A car that makes me smile.
Nevertheless, recent experiences have taken a turn for the worse.
After a motorway jaunt down to Dover from NE Hampshire, I noticed afterwards that it's low rev performance was very poor and then engine juddered when it would usually pull like a horse. I suspected some kind of intake related issue so took it into my Alfa guy.
Nothing obvious came up in terms of blockages or otherwise in the intake, so he ran the engine. Disconnecting the injectors on 1, 3 and 4 cylinders stalled the engine ... disconnecting the connector on #2 and the engine kept running (although still with the judder). Clearly something was dodgy on this injector. And those aren't exactly cheap or necessarily easy to fix.
Unfortunately, he didn't have the wherewithal to do an injector repair, so I took it to a local diesel specialist who swapped a new one in. Unfortunately, no change in the symptoms (which was annoying to say the least), so I told them to have a further look.
After a few days the report came back inconclusive, but with the suspicion that the head gasket might have gone ...
I then asked them to remove the cylinder head to have a look see.
And now we are almost up-to-date. According to the diesel specialist, what is suspected to be an inlet manifold valve broke off and was sucked into cylinder #2 where it bounced around doing damage to inlet valve, cylinder head, bore and exhaust valves before being ejected.
The repair is being quoted at "teeth sucking" while the fix is being quoted at the price of the car currently.
I'd be grateful for the thoughts of the community ... should I get a fix/repair? Has anyone else had this experience? Should I just cut my loses and sell for spares/scrap?
I must admit to being a little bit heartbroken, so am not thinking particularly straight!
