Re: Brera MPG
I have also experienced the rear "hot" smell but not combined with a decrease in mpg. I have checked the brakes and they were okay. The exhaust pipes however seemed very hot, ie hotter than a tail pipe would normally be.
Apart from the normal ALFA gremlins (rocking chair, inlet valve, alarm) which I have had fixed by ALFA, I also think the synchromesh is getting slower. I think I have read somewhere someone else who has that problem.
I also am getting just above 30mpg (2.4Jtdm SV driven carefully) and have written to Alfa (many times), trading standards and VCA. It is clear that the ALFA figures have been provided to the VCA by ALFA under some form of mutual acceptance agreement, and have not been tested by the VCA.
The long and short of it is that ALFA have provided figures for a 2.4JTDM brera (41.5) which are not just optomistic, but fraudulent. The actual is 30-32mpg, so inflated by over 30%.
There are arguments about driving styles, tests figures only being representative of driving conditions, but sorry they don't stack up. 5% or even 10% perhaps, but not 30%. This flagrant abuse of the "government figures" should not be allowed to go unpunished as it makes a mockery out of the whole "official government figures" thing, which many of us rely on when making a buying decision.
i think there are two things we can do which may get noticed.
Everyone who has an underperforming mpg ALFA:-
1) write to their local Trading Standards, if they get enough they will have to act.
2) write to ALFA customer care, claiming back the additional money it has cost them to drive around at 32mpg instead of 41.5mpg.
