Alfa 159 sudden massive smoking then goes
Hi, Im a 159 owner and my own 159 jtd would occasionally smoke excessively around every few hundred miles for no reason. Originally I thought it was a dfp regen going on but this was not the case.
In November I fitted a new dayco timing belt kit and by Jan the tensioner had failed.| I made a warranty claim again Dayco and they paid out. Incidentely a previous Dayco kit I fitted to a customers car also failed within 12 months.
The point im coming to is whilst I had the top end apart I took off the inlet manifold to remove the dodgy swirl flaps and I cleaned out the inlet manifold this was really full of deposits you could spoon it out!
Car is back together no more sudden smoking where a glug of deposits are sucked into the combustion chamber.
Id recommend any 159 jtd owner to get the swirl flaps removed and inlet manifold cleaned out once the engine is getting on a bit.
Ive seen swirl flaps damage engines at 80k and im now allergic to Dayco timing belt kits. Good thing is I now know why the sudden excessive smoke was occurring.
